Day 14: Boredom

My biggest struggle so far is the boredom. I was a boredom drinker. To me, wine made even the boringness day not so boring. Now I'm left with a lot of time on my hands. And It takes a lot to keep my attention. I struggle especially on weekends with sitting still. I've been spending quite a bit of money but I know that needs to stop before it gets out of control. Anyone else struggle with this?

That is a great list/thread!! It just shows that it is not for lack of things to do that we are bored, in my opinion.

It is hard at first to find the motivation to break out of the rut we dug by drinking. But this is probably what "recovery" really means...recovering our time, our minds, our lives...filling our lives anew with things that interest us and which are useful.

you can devote some time "getting your house in order" - only literally your ABODE. take everything out of your closet and go thru each piece one at a time.....do you love it? do you WEAR it? do you need it? bag up the discard pile for a trip to goodwill.

then go thru your drawers....same thing.....is there stuff in there you haven't even SEEN for a year?

put stuff back all neat and orderly.....refresh your belongings, your surroundings. each thing you do is an expression of caring......gratitude.

You will get more time on your hands from simply not being hungover. Given time i'm sure that you will find the thing or things that interest you

I had a grasshopper mind in early recovery

Hi secretchord :)

what I thought was boredom was actually an inability to do things without a bottle in my hand - I'd become so used to the bottle bringing fun to mundanity that I was lost at sea for a while.

Anna's list is great - I found volunteering in my community was a very useful thing to do - it got me out of the house and gave me a sense of purpose.

Other people get back into old hobbies or start new ones...exercise, sports......

The only real limit is your imagination...trust me, in a while you'll be wondering why there are not more hours in the day :)
