I Am New Here

Hi all, I'm not quite finished drinking yet but after my birthday on Thursday I'm hoping to join the ranks of the recovering. Wish me luck!

Thanks Dee, I've been building up to this day for a long time. I only stumbled upon this site tonight while surfing the web for words of encouragement ahead of my quest for sobriety.

Welcome to the Forum IamIrish!!

You'll find loads of support here on SR to help out, be careful not to fall into the trap of good intentions though, I've been there and got the box of t-shirts, Thursdays used to become I'll wait until after the weekend, and then after another social event, then maybe in the New Year, and before I knew it another 3 months of drinking had easily passed without ever taking that first step.

You can do this!!

I understand what youre saying. I've said Thursday too many times PK. This time I'm ready. I've been working up to this day for around 12 months. I've been slowly tapering my drinking and cannabis use down from a litre of rum + a bag of grass per day x 4 down to 30 pints of Guinness per week.

Many thanks, SL. I'm surprised I never found this site before as I've been perusing various AA related sites of late..

Welcome Iamirish. I found this site and community the same way you did. When I stumbled onto SR, I was searching supplements that I could take to alleviate my bright red face from drinking heavily for 21 years.

I had no idea there were others out there with the same problem I have.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks very much Ccam. I've had a drink problem since I'm 13 yrs old. It wasn't until 3 yrs ago that it was brought to my attention that I might have a drink problem by an ex alcoholic "online" friend., I've realised since that I'm one of those people that shouldn't drink. I meet them all the time in my work but always denied that I was one of these people (Denial) I'm ok with my label if thats what it is.. I feel sorry for people who still don't know they have a problem. Not their problem I know, sometimes people are so deep in their own culture they don't realise that their attitude is totally detrimental to leading a good life.

Hi Iamirish. Will you promise us that you'll check back with us on Fri? Even if it's just to say f off. Many people have had good intentions until the rubber hit the road and then years later finally came to their senses. I was one of them.

Thanks Neferm, nice touch with the blooming rose

I hope to conquer this hill. My plan is a trebled prong approach comprising of:

Fitness
Appearance
confidence
hopefully progress in the first will lead to major progress in the rest..

I found SR by googling around, too. Was looking into anxiety and drinking and stumbled on this site. I saw references to RR/AVRT, there are great threads on what they are in the Secular Connections forum here on SR. That material really resonated with me, I highly recommend taking a look.
Glad you found this corner of the 'net, great community of fellow travelers with tons of advice, support and experience.
Come back often , read, post ask.
Wish you well and hope to see you around.
And yeah it's great gift to give yourself, open your present early , why wait

You won't regret getting sober. I did almost six years ago and don't regret a minute of it. Only wish I'd done it sooner.
