What substantial changes are necessary
Good topic. I'll add some of my own once I've had some serious sober time under my belt. Right now, I'm too newly sober to offer much sound advice; however, I will say that I'm coming to accept that I'm not giving anything up by not drinking; I'm not depriving myself of anything. And I am making some significant changes in my thinking and the way I view what should be considered a happy, fulfilling life.

I had to accept that sometimes you have to just sit in uncomfortable feelings or situation. I had gotten so use to changing how I felt anytime i wanted to with alcohol. Hadn't experienced authentic emotions in years - everything was based upon my alcohol consumption or lack thereof.
I had to be honest with myself.
not 'almost entirely honest'
not '99% honest'
(the above didn't work, or worked for a while and then didn't work and came back even worse than before)
I had to be completely and absolutely honest to myself, about myself.
What a great topic, thanks MIRecovery.
