What if I told you.... you could stop right now

What if I told you that all the struggling could be done and you could turn a corner and this time, it would feel different?

What if I told you that if you embraced SOBRIETY and LIFE and you made a conscious and fully-committed choice to squeeze as much richness and goodness and joy out of this life you have left as you possibly can - you'd feel better and things would steadily improve and before too long your whole life would be amazing?

What if I told you that you'd look back and be incredulous that you'd taken so long and baffled that you'd ever thought drinking again was the answer. You'd be curious and dumbfounded that you had ever felt alcohol held the key or that you 'couldn't' live differently?

What if I told you that it may not always be easy, but that something would fall into place with that choice to really LIVE and that somehow even when it got a little challenging - or a LOT challenging - you'd still be carried through by a faith and a genuine belief that the road ahead in sobriety for you was the one that you not only wanted, but would continue to have, to cherish and to be proud of?

Well.... I'm telling you; all of these things are real. All of them are yours. All of them can begin RIGHT NOW. No matter where you're starting from.

I've had my failures. I rose and I fell. Tried many different ways to moderate. Tried several times to "take a break". Tried numerous efforts to "clean up a while, sort of 'reset' my body and mind". I quietly ran tests that I abysmally tanked. I secretly used strategies that never wound me up anywhere but another eventual blackout. I got sentenced to programs. I joined programs willingly. I sometimes wondered if I'd just keep on falling and I was angry and resentful that I'd been encumbered by this, that I couldn't just be like "normal people". But all those things led me to finally, simply, make the HONEST, SINCERE, DEEP choice that I was going to live life sober and live life as fully as possible. And then from there all of it unfolded... and more.

YOU CAN, TOO

Truth. We each of us have within us the desire for a good well-lived life, and the ability to do what we must do to have it.

I completely agree with you. I'll speak for myself, it took me awhile to figure that out. And it can take awhile to figure out what truth is. Lots of looking deep inside oneself.

I would tell you that you are 1,000% correct.

Believe what FreeOwl says; it's true. I'm living proof and there of many of us.

I used a lot of methods in my toolkit in terms of the actions and support that helped me; a counselor, AA, exercise, The Big Book, this forum, remembering all the various efforts that failed, remembering the consequences, gratitude lists, journaling, playing the tape, stopping going to drinking-centric things, shifting my friendships and focus of activities, etc etc etc.....

I don't follow any one thing exactly, but I take what works for me from a lot of areas in life and integrate them all into my sober living.....

But your question is a simple one; HOW did I finally make it stick?

THIS..... THIS is the ONE thing that underlies it all. THIS is what changed. THIS is what I did that shifted everything and made it stick;

"But all those things led me to finally, simply, make the HONEST, SINCERE, DEEP choice that I was going to live life sober and live life as fully as possible."

The Secret is right inside....

When we are beat. When we accept that dispite our best efforts we will never be able to drink like normal people. When we are willing to do absolutely anything to win the prize. Then we are well on our way to a life better than any you can imagine
