Crazy sleep patterns

Today is day starting day 12. Everything is good, cravings and triggers are getting better. I'm finding my way to staying busy after work without drinking, etc. but my sleep seems to be getting worse. I have always taken a benedryl before bed for sleep and allergies. When I quit drinking. I would take half a melatonin too. The first week I slept real good. The past few nights, I've been waking up at 2-3am and wide awake for a hour or so. Then I fall back asleep hard and getting up at 630 is right in the middle of some hard sleep. I didn't take anything tonight and I'm having the same scenario. Oh well, certainly a minor issue compared to drinking and having awful hangovers, etc.

It will take some time for your brain to adapt to normal functioning. Good sleep will come. It just takes time. Twelve days is very early. Give it more time.

Even with these breaks in sleep in the middle of the night, I feel so good when I get up compared to how it was- this is a minor issue.

I've tried benadryl for insomnia and at first it helped, but later it gave me restless legs and made it worse...

Try this on for size: Some nights I wake up every hour on the hour.

Kids - I had a bad night's sleep last night, too. I was hot all night, couldn't relax and couldn't stay asleep. This is unusual for me because I'm a pretty good sleeper usually! I just wanted to let you know you're not alone! Congrats on Day 12 - I think the sleep will get better!!

I think that is a great way of putting it, and a healthy perspective. It is annoying but in the overall scope of things, its minor.

Thanks Juno. And congrats on day 12! I've had restless leg in the past (not real bad). It is amazing that alcohol is not detectable after a few hours of not drinking, but here we are day 12 with our bodies trying to reboot. I was wide awake in the middle of the night. I have never needed an alarm clock- for some reason, I always wake up when I'm supposed to. This morning, my wife woke me up 10 minutes later than I would have normally got us up and I was in a deep sleep, probably would have slept another hour. Crazy.
But heck, if this is my biggest issue on the path to a new life, I'll take it all day long (actually all night long). Keep up the great work!

It took me a good six weeks before I could get more than 3-4 hours of sleep a night. My brain was used to being alcohol soaked every night and I would basically pass out. Remember that at the very least, you are not waking up hungover and with a torn up stomach. Hang in there, it will get better.

I would agree in that it also took me a month or so to start sleeping well again but waking up with no hangover, racing heart, night sweats, racing mind were all a giant plus.

Oh and the anxiety so glad that's gone.

It does take the brain awhile to adjust. One of the best parts of my sobriety has been deep, restful sleep that I never got whilst drinking.

Day nine. Same problem. If I get four hours of sleep every 24, I feel relieved and rested. I say four hours of sober sleep is far better than twelve hours of alcohol induced sleep. A nap somewhere in my waking hours helps too.

I'm up at 3:30 am. I do go to bed around 9 then read and quickly fall asleep. I'm sober 7 weeks tomorrow and sleeping well, I feel refreshed when I wake up, but short. I guess I only need around 5 hours.
