Inspirational sober/teetotal people

So I think it's good for me (everybody) to have mentors / inspirational people who have achieved what you want to achieve for every one of your goals.....

When I was a teenager I used this mentoring/role moddling in a negative way.....Hello Jim Morrison....

Later in a postive way with Bruce Lee.......I didn't consciously know that they were influencing me at the time...

But being consciously aware of the laws of association, I can use it to my advantage.....I was looking at the list of "famous teetotalers" to see who I could relate to....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_teetotalers

maybe:
Frankie Boyle (Intelligent, controversial)
Billy Connolly (nice recovery story with him and his wife)
Russell Brand (his eyes say he has a mental illness, he's got over his addictions)
Noel Fielding (all outspoken comedians)
Tom Cruise (was never a fan of his really, only started to like him when I discovered what kind of personality he has)
Che Guevara (it's Che isn't it. I want to do motorcycle diaries like him)
Curtis 50 cent Jackson (not a "fan" of his from a music point of view, but from the book he did with Robert Greene and his business acum)
Bruce Lee (legend....I have to start liking him again....very inspirational)
Ewan Mcgregor (never a fan, but liked him after that documentary he did. down to earth guy, family man)

that's all that stands out for now....

who is your sober/teetotal inspirations? celebrity or real!!

......and what's the difference between sober and teetotal???

here's another teetotal boy....Akon with an apt song if you've just recently had a (last) binge....like me

These are the ones who stood out, for me personally
(though for some I'm still like, wait, really?! For sure??):

David Bowie
Robert Downie Jr
Richard Feynman
Stephen King
H.P. Lovecraft
Joe Manganiello
Daniel Radcliffe
Christina Ricci
Anne Rice
Tilda Swinton

I should keep this list around, to remind myself...

I did too. I looked to Hemingway, Bukowski, and the scads of other alcoholic writers.

Now I look to people like Joyce Carol Oates ... nondrinker, nonsmoker, non-coffee drinker even! Runs daily. And is unbelievably prolific as a writer.

Anne Rice got sober. So did Stephen King.

Great post

Bruce must be a teetotaler from way back. I was invited to a backstage party ( no, not a groupie! ) right when Born to Run came out. There was not a drop of alcohol or a drug in the backstage party. I was disappointed back then Wow, thats admirable Bruuuuuce!

Fantastic model, agreed. I follow her on Twitter. I watch her posts every day. She posts so many things that I'm already interested in, it's funny She posts nearly the same kinds of things I tend to post, only she's WAY more knowledgeable than me about books at this point, lol. She's probably got an encyclopedic knowledge. I would absolutely love to meet her, or sit it a class. Yeah, just sitting in a class would suffice

That is great that you follow her. I have had the pleasure of spending some time with her, and she if very funny and witty--very deferential too. Be sure to go if you ever get a chance to hear her read her work--she is a great reader of her stuff (not all writers are).

I thought she had a pretty good sense of humor, it shows even in her Tweets.

That's awesome you have talked with her!

Yeah, she seems to always bring attention to and praise fellow writers. I love that about her, and that she seems humble.

That's a great idea. I would like to hear her in person

I didn't know Frankie Boyle or Noel Fielding were teetotal - good stuff

Joe Walsh is one of my recovery heroes, along with James Taylor - they both pulled them selves back from the brink.

Kerry Collins

He got sober just before I did after several very public incidents and nearly getting run out of the NFL. He became a very quiet, humble guy and just a year into sobriety he was the starting QB in a Super Bowl and his sobriety was a lead story. It seemed like a lot of pressure and he addressed it only because he had to but you could tell he would much rather not be in the spotlight. I rooted for him even though I hate the Giants.

Great post. I did enjoy looking through that wikipedia list. I also happened upon this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_edge

I used to follow some of these bands when I was younger. Especially Minor Threat and Fugazi. So for me, Ian McKay is my teetotal hero now, given that I was always drunk at his gigs. I do look forward to going to a punk/hardcore gig sober at some point in the future.....

Thanks for this excellent post Allhow!
