I stay 25 miles west of Glasgow. Most shops/supermarkets will sell Ginger Beer, Non alcoholic. Schweppes and Barrs are 2 of the brands. Yeh, Irn-Bru is one of our biggest, They rival CocaCola here.

Have a good time here

Glad you discovered Irn Bru. Never met anyone who has the slightest idea what it's made from (the advert's say it's made from girders), but several million Scots can't be wrong. Though they (allegedly) also like deep fried Mars bars, so they might not be the best sources of dietary advice

My pub drink of choice these days is a pint of cranberry and soda. I find soft drinks too sweet, but this makes for a very refreshing drink that you can have a few of without getting that sickly feeling too much pop or straight fruit juice can give you.

Kevin, I'm originally a similar distance west of Glasgow. Possibly different sides of the Clyde though

Semiconductor Business got me to Scotland many times. We then branched out and stayed in more remote areas, including Skye before the Bridge. As it turns out, the Steam Train in the first Harry Potter Film runs up the Coast to the Terminus in Mallaig. From there, we took a short Ferry to Skye.

The Pebble Beach seen below on Skye was a pivotal Landing Strip for WW II Aircraft at Low Tide. Observation Bunkers to spot Enemy Craft were all around. We hiked up to them where they dotted the Hills. You can really let your Mind wander in such locations...

Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson had a huge Spread + Salmon Farm at the South end, so we took a drive to find it. He reportedly has since donated much of the Land to the John Muir Society to ensure preservation. Long before 'Geocaching', he gave clues on finding this Estate in a Contest on a Limited Edition of his 'Thick As A Brick' Album I'd run across in a Berlin Record Store.

- Ian Anderson's Strathaird Salmon Farm Pictures -

Stellar Beachcombing there. All were had by a good time. I'm sure you will be too!

I have this somewhat vague memory of Irn Bru being advertised as "made out of girders."

Have a wonderful time, FreeOwl.

Think it was "Made in Scotland from girders".

I think I also read that the EC were threatening to ban it because they couldn't certify the ingredients as they were a secret.

well... wedding was lovely, and I - sober throughout!

I've enjoyed IRN-BRU as well as discovered that pubs have a thing called J20 which is quite tasty in several varieties... basically it's juice and water.

The coffee is also quite good.

Today we're off to do some exploring. Last night we took a walk to the sea through the paddocks and hills under the highland moonlight.

It's a beautiful place, Skye....

very limited connectivity around here, which I'm also enjoying!

Thanks all! A long but wonderful day. Caught up with a friend and his family I've not seen in six years. This county's so filled with beauty, we've got to come back with a longer window of time to spend.

Bedded down in Glasgow for two nights and then it's back home.

Elderflower soda is awesome.

Scotland sober is better than Scotland ever was drunk!
