Mindfulness
Hi Justin - they are two different things to me, although I can see how meditation could be a part of mindfulness.

For me, mindfulness is paying attention to things instead of passively letting life fly by in a blur. It has taken some practice, but has given me many rewards.
It's kind of the opposite of numbing out.

Mindfulness is being aware of what you are doing. For example, I am now trying to get in shape and lose weight. I use the site My Fitness Plan (MFP) to track all my food and my exercise. It then calculates how many calories I've eaten and how many I've burned. If I want to lose weight I have to create a calorie deficit. So - I am very mindful of what I am putting into my mouth and what types of activities I am doing.
Another way to be mindful is to write in a journal - your thoughts and what things you have done during the day.
In terms of drinking - just don't reach for that next drink. If you never drink again, and never change your mind - no matter what, you'll never have another Day 1 and all the other crap that goes along with drinking.
