Never too old to learn?
Never too old to learn?
I am in my 50s and thought I had a handle on everything. I knew in the past that I periodically had "a drinking problem". I refused to call myself an alcoholic though. I could control it if I wanted to, and did sometimes. I also have had lifelong issues with depression. I knew a while back that alcohol did not help depression, but worsens it. I'll reveal my drinking patterns at another time. Right now I just want to admit that I am an alcoholic. I really do think it is poison to me. In the last year I have drank 4 times to get drunk, 2-3 months apart. Other times I can drink a beer or 2 and not think about it for a long time. Once again I am promising myself it will never happen again.
Sorry if this is long and boring. lol
I just needed somewhere to unburden my mind and have no one to talk. Thank you for reading.

Welcome to SR yellowyellow, your post is definitely not long or boring, we understand how it is and good for you for getting it out there/off your chest. Hope you can stick around and share/learn some more with us.
It really doesn't matter what you label yourself, if alcohol causes problems in your life, then quit
The only time I ever identify myself is at an AA meeting before I speak, you know, "hi, I'm and X and I'm an alcoholic . . . "

Welcome friend. I stopped drinking when I was 58. After years of trying to quit and moderate my intake it was better to just stop altogether. Only then did I slowly become aware of other issues I had, that I had been self-medicating for decades. It was really worth the effort to do this.
It's never too late to quit. I stopped at 49. I'll be 51 soon enough. One of the best things I've done for myself.
I needed support though. Here and in real life, so I attend AA meetings too.
