First doctors visit

I did it. I went and was honest. Told him how long I've been drinking and how much. It was not easy. I also told him I was worried about that going in my medical chart. He is treating me for "anxiety". He did more labs to check my liver. More comprehensive tests. He prescribed two meds to help with anxiety and dt's. I go back in a week. That was a very hard step!!

When I first started talking to him, I could tell he wasn't happy. Then when I teared up, his demeanor changed. I'm a new patient for him. Only been there once before for my annual checkup about 2 months ago. It may have been easier if I would have had a long term patient doctor relationship. Maybe not. Who knows. All I know is I'm SO glad it is over and I can move forward with honesty.

I'm happy for you that you did that! They can easily treat for anxiety because that is the presenting symptom. Most doc's do understand our reluctance to have alcoholism in our records. That said, my doc did put it in my record and I haven't had any negative consequences. As you noted, it is often a huge relief to get it out in the open. I personally believe that the AV thrives on secrecy.

Sinderos, I'm glad you were brave enough to do that.

It's unfortunate that the doctor didn't seem receptive when you first started talking to him, but thankfully he came through.

That's great. That's something I was unable to do while drinking, as hard as I tried. I am way overdue for an ob/gyn checkup among other things .I need a CBC, etc. I didn't want to hear the bad news and always made a deal with myself that I'd go after two months of being sober. I was so fearful.

Scratch that plan. I ended up in ER/ICU and had every test/blood test under the sun at the "zenith" of my drinking career. Constant monitoring and bloodwork, EKG, liver tests galore, etc. You are doing it the smarter way. i admire you.

Way to go, Sinderos! I know it's frightening but as you say, once the truth is out and the cards are on the table you can move forward with a plan.
