New in Town
Evening everyone,
My name's Josh and this whole sober thing is completely new to me. I'm a drunk to say the least but I haven't had a drink in a week now. I'd be proud, but, it scares me more than anything else because one week is just shy of how far I made it the last time I "quit." It is my belief that if I want to remain sober I can't just hide away at home all day alone. I need to go out and find something positive to do with my time other than work that's unrelated to drinking, and as such, I'm reaching out.
If any of you know of anything to do in the Livingston county area in Michigan that could help keep me busy please let me know. Or if any of you just want to chat feel free to comment. Thanks in advance for your help and support.

Welcome Josh, you'll find a lot of support and understanding here. Congrats on a week, that's a heck of an accomplishment. As far as "what to do" instead of drinking, the answer is pretty much anything you want! Including things you can't do when you are drunk....which means you have more choices than you did before!

Start honoring your body and get it back in shape. Here's a spot to check out...

Your body might really crave sugar for a bit. Might as well splurge on homemade awesomeness. You deserve it! Mom and Pops Bakery, Howell - Restaurant Reviews & Phone Number - TripAdvisor
Good luck! Go Blue!

Hey Josh,
Huge congratulations on the week. We all know how hard that first week is.
It sounds like you're real aware of the situation and needing to quit.
My recommendation is to have ongoing support, preferable daily. I check in on these boards about once a day for maybe 30 minutes to an hour. It's my daily "meeting" you could say. Reading experiences and sharing on here has truly helped me stay sober for over a year now.
When I went it alone I could get a week on occasion but then always just figured I'd drink only that nighttry at a later date. Sometimes the next try was a year later.
Stick around.

Hi Josh and welcome. Getting busy is a great idea. Be careful not to fall into old traps though, such as going to places to be social but might end up triggering you to drink. Do you have a bike? I'm a big gym rat, but I have recently been taking leisurely bike rides for some extra exercise and have found it to be immensely enjoyable. I didn't think I would like it but it is not so bad. You can get much further than you would get to by walking and you notice more scenery than if you were driving.
What about volunteering? Are you good at a particular subject that you could offer to tutor kids who need some extra help in school?
Best of luck to you.

Hi Josh,
The sky is the limit on things to do now. I love learning anything new. Before i got sober I'd lay on the couch drunk all the time having delusions of all the amazing things I was going to do. Funny thing is I never lifted a finger to do them because I was drunk.
Getting out side is always a good start.
Glad you found us Josh.
