Curious Question

I know some people who say they are sober (from alcohol), but still smoke marijuana. I'm just curious as to what you think of this concept. Is this sobriety or not?

Marijuana is a drug mind alterant so no i wouldnt class myself sober if i did smoke it (i dont btw)

I agree with this soberwolf, it just seems like a lot of people don't have this view. They see marijuana as not having the same negative consequences of alcohol. But I think if you have a need to smoke often, then there is something else going on.

I agree, i had a couple friends whos lives were ruined by marijuana ive heard ppl say similar things im not having a go as i see it as any addiction = Damaging

I am recognizing that my "addictive brain" is already trying to come up with ways to feed itself...that's why I thought of this today. Damn this is hard :D

Thank you, soberwolf. Yes, it took me awhile to get into this hole, it will take a bit of work to get out :tyou

I think your question could apply to a few different scenarios, and I think its a good question. I am on pretty strong pain medication, am I "sober". I don't know, I don't take it to get high, I take it to relieve pain from surgery. But many do take it to get high.

In my IOP we were tested each session for alcohol and drugs. Marijuana was one of them. One of the things that surprised me was how long it stays in our bodies - about a month to clear out after smoking just a very small amount. Another was how nearly everyone in our group of about 10 used alcohol or drugs with marijuana. Coincidence?

I try to remember that, in the end, what other people believe or class as sober is really none of my business.

For me, tho, marijuana was every bit as destructive as alcohol...if not more so cos the pot was more insidious - it presented itself as more benign, and for a long time I willingly believed that.

Personally speaking, no. Pot actually was my first DOC that led me to drinking. I need to stay a million miles away from it.

It's a tough one, because just like alcohol some people may not have a problem with it, and in some places in the world it's now perfectly legal.

In my opinion it's a bit of a mind field, but ask me can marijuana be destructive, and I'll show you a whole section within SR of people trying to rebuild their lives.

I think it has to be judged on a case by case basis. There is no definitive rule. As Thomas said, some people are on pain meds, or may have even been prescribed pot by a doctor and most would consider themselves sober.

Agree with Purple knight, it's a potential minefield!

I am fortunate that I don't like marijuana, not one bit. Never have and I'm certainly not starting now. I am now living my life substance free.

I know people who smoke it recreationally and it has no negative impact on their lives. Just like I know people who drink a few drinks a few days a week without it impacting their lives at all. They are not addicts.

I live in a state where marijuana is legal for recreational use.

I am a non-drinker and non-pot smoker.

sugarbear1 07-27-2015 04:30 AM

I gave up both around the same time. Anything that gets me out of my head isn't good for me.

I have heard if the marijuana maintenance thing attempted by alcoholics- alcoholics who stopped drinking, continued smoking, ended up picking up the bottle, and everything got worse.

Their experience tells me it's not an option for me.

Is it sober?
To thine own self be true.
But not for me.

IMO seeing it’s mind altering and if not prescribed for a legitimate ailment it’s not being sober.

BE WELL
