red wine
So my doctor told me to drink a glass of red wine a day it will help lower my cholesterol.... Huh ... An she know thatiI'ma aalcoholic... She said my levels are high an this may help... My av is tellingme to try it.. SShe'sthe doctor an know best..
Tony, I agree with bimini. Any doctor who knows you are an alcoholic and tells you to have a glass of red wine is not the best candidate for the job for you. Here in the States students spend one day on addiction during med school. One day, for an affliction that plagues about 10% of the population, not even taking into account the large pool of friends and family they affect.
Before I got sober I had a few months of sobriety. I was under the care of a psychiatrist (prescribed my sleeping meds). During one conversation he mentioned "everybody slips". To me it was license to drink, a week later I was drinking again.
While I am sure you doc is well intentioned we need to be advocates of our own care. It is important for us to get educated so they we can make the best decisions about protecting our sobriety. Lowering your cholesterol does not hinge on red wine. There are a number of other options.
Good on you for coming here and talking about it. That is a major deliberate decision towards protecting your sobriety. Stick close if that AV doesn't go away.

I understand that Dr's workloads are large and the occasional mistake can be made, but not something like this. Your alcohol issue has to be documented if you have told her. This is not acceptable. Furthermore, the way Dr's are chomping at the bit to prescribe pills, I'm surprised she just didn't reach for the prescription pad. I believe there are like 17 different cholesterol drugs available.

Worst doctor ever? A real possibility. If you want to lower cholesterol you can make dietary changes plus exercise. Don't drink! You know that was terrible, negligent advice without us even commenting on it.
Dumb doctor. Amazing how many there are.
Eat lots of veggies (esp greens and cruciferous), fruits (esp berries), legumes, nut/seeds, and you'll see how your lipid panel will improve! Doctors aren't as knowledgeable as they should be in diet as rule, but that is slowly changing.

My cholesterol shot up after I stopped drinking wine. I am trying to get it under control with diet and exercise. If I can't, my doctor is putting me on a prescription.

Don't play games with your addiction. This disease is chronic, progressive and fatal. Find a new doctor. People die every single day from alcoholism. Your cholesterol may go down, but that doesn't matter when you are dead.
