One Man Dead... Another in custody
One Man Dead... Another in custody
The headline locally just now. Heroin overdose. The other guy charged with delivery of a controlled substance causing death.
I never tried heroin, thank god.
My biggest issue was alcohol - though I also went through a number of other drugs in my day.
But the thing is.... if I'd kept on drinking and drugging, who knows?
Maybe that headline could be me....
Grateful it's not. Sad for that guy and his family. Sad for the guy who's headed off to prison. Sad that there are many others out there, right now, just like them.....
We don't have to be one of those stories..... today, and every day, we have a choice.

You are right, thank you for this grounding post. We do, we really do have a choice, not so easy all the time and more difficult for some than for others, but as best as we can............let's make it a good and positive choice, or at least try.

I believe cocaine and heroin are different. It's very hard to die of a cocaine overdose. Really easy to do with heroin...
I am just thinking along the lines of personal responsibility. You KNOW what you are getting into, therefore shouldn't be surprised by the consequences.
I have an addict mind, 100%, but there is no way I would ever start heroin.
I work in a courthouse in the Midwest, U.S., and I can assure you that 70% of out dockets are heroin related offenses. It's also something that covers every ethnicity, socio-economic background... I just don't get why a person would shoot up knowing how dangerous and addicting it is, unless that person is willing to gamble with the consequences, or they are not very bright... I know the "bright" comment is going to get people mad but come on... When is the person responsible? Do we always blame the disease for everything?

Every weekend there is at least one alcohol related death in our newspaper, usually more than one. "Alcohol and speed are suspected to be a factor in the accident" is generally listed somewhere in the article. There's usually some kind of drug related violence/neglect too, sometimes alcohol related, sometimes meth, sometimes both.
Bottom line, any substance can be lethal - alcohol, meth, heroin, cocaine, even pot if it is used chronically and habitually. The death can be quick ( car accident, suicide, violence ) or very slow and drawn out ( lung cancer, malnutrition, etc )
Recognizing your addiction, no matter what he substance is, is the only hope.

You can blame our heroin problem on the Mexicans. We've started growing and legalizing pot.....and its way better than the Mexicans .......and they can't compete.....even the Mexicans want our Cush......so they came up w a new crop ......dying of malnutrition ........it seems like an impossibility in this country but for drug addicts it's not......
The US maybe impacted by heroin coming in from Mexico but it's a leap from there to blaming 'Mexicans'.
Leave that crap to Donald Trump.

I agree Dee.
Also my point above was simply there was a time I'd have never believed I'd do cocaine. Then one day I was hardcore with it for two years. Who knows at what point in my addictive decline heroin may have suddenly seemed to like a good idea.

A lot of heroin addicts will tell you they started with prescription opiates. It's not like they wake up one day and decide to stick a dirty needle in their arm.
Plenty of blame to go around. What they need is support.

I have a very good friend who is a musician.....he's been addicted to heroin for 30 years.....that's a long time for a heroin addict....they usually don't last that long. He's back in rehab for like the 10th time. Very sad indeed.
