Looking for support

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and on day 3 of trying to stay sober. I'm having a really hard time and the people in my life care, but aren't very helpful in the support department...they just don't understand. I know I should find a meeting to go to, but I went to one and found it extremely awkward and I have such anxiety over trying a different one that it actually triggers me to want to drink more.

In the meantime, I've been writing a blog to help get all these things out of my head and I was wondering if any of you might be willing to read it and help support me by giving me a little lifeline of support through comments. Anyway, if you don't mind too much, my blog is listed in my profile. It won't let me post the link here because I'm a newbie.

Thank you for your help,
Ellie

Welcome to SR, Ellie. I am glad you are here with us. I think you came to the right place. When I joined, I was struck by how the people here really understood what I was going through - much more than did my friends and family. And the amount of support that I have received from the good people here has helped me stay sober for going on 2 years now. In fact, SR has been my primary source of support. Everyone is different. But what this place offers has been exactly what I need.

Good luck on your sober journey. I hope you will post often and let us know how you are doing.

Welcome, Actually you can't ever post a link to your blog on these forums, but you can list it in your profile as you have. Also, many of our members have blogs on our message board. You can do that, too.

HI Ellie. Day 3 sucks. I would rather have Ebola for a few days than go through alcohol withdrawal if given the choice. Stay focused on the light at the end of the tunnel. Couple more days and you should feel better. I found that the misery starts to lift by day 4 or 5.

Hi there RAE,

Welcome to SR. You will find a lot of support here.

Anna said it best, a lot of people keep there "blogs" on the message board.

Aside from that, your fitness will come back as you get more time in sobriety. Booze really messes with your fitness level. Hope you get to do that marathon sometime.

The voice in your head - the AV, Addictive Voice. You may want to look at some AVRT to combat it. All the links are at the top.

Try not to think too much about never drinking ever again. It can be overwhelming at times, instead think - I will not drink now, I will not drink today. Baby steps in the beginning. Like running, you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Learn to walk before you can run.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Cheers,

ZAB
