Using your Recovery Tools.

So i'm a week shy of 5 months sober.

This past Saturday we went to a wedding reception event.

The MOMENT we get there...They hand out drink tickets. 5 for the evening..Which i promptly gave away. I won't lie...It was an uncomfortable evening for me.

I was only there to support my GF and to congratulate our friends.
But in hindsight i wouldn't have gone...The alcohol was EVERYWHERE. A tool i did use though...I talked it through with my sponsor prior to going.

He also made me promise to call at 9 PM. (Which i did.)

At 11 PM, i told my GF we need to leave. (Which we agreed to before going...But she gave the old...Well NO one else is leaving....

We had a mini fight over it...And i asked her to come outside with me. We talked a bit more...And we left at 11:30.

When we left...The SHOTS were beginning...And people were getting LOUD and...well LOUD! It was time to leave.

The tools were in place though...I had an established escape time...(Well half hour later anyways...) And i had a call i NEEDED to make to my sponsor.

This upcoming 5 months has been hard-earned. This past weekend was a test...And well...With my TOOLS i think i passed.
Just like in real life...You need to USE the tools to see the results.

Have a good day everyone. I'm not drinking TODAY!

Good for you! And yes, accepting that you knew you would feel uncomfortable was a good start because it helped you to formulate a plan. If you go out with the idea that 'it won't bother me if people are drinking', then you are less prepared. Tools are so important.

I was at a wedding myself two weeks ago. The couple actually did a shot with the bridal party during the service

Dee commented to me that witnessing those sorts of behaviors cemented his decision to be sober. Whole heartily agree.

Well done finding!
