Poker night is a tough one, brynn. I go to a monthly game as well. There are 3 things hanging out there for me that are big challenges. Poker night, big backyard BBQ with all the good friends, and fishing on my buddy's boat.

I certainly don't want to cut those things out of my life but all 3 are major triggers. The way I see it is I need to do all 3 and not drink the first time. If I do give in then I already know the next time will be so much easier. Or I have to cut myself out of going to these things and that really stinks.

Conversely, if I pull it off sober then the next time will be much easier to do sober.

Not easy any way you slice it and dice it.

I agree with biminiblue - remove the option Brynn. The only other thing is to say no booze to your friends. I'm sure they will understand either way

Agreed. Sometimes it's best to just fold a bad hand and live to fight another day. No use gambling with your health, life, and sanity on the line.

Thanks y'all and I know in my gut y'all are right. I've been unsettled all week and this is more than likely an excuse to drink. I just don't want this to become a pattern where I don't do things I enjoy for fear of drinking....and it hasn't so far but I don't want this to be the beginning of that kind of thinking.

Hi all.
Brynn sounds like my last week. Went to a friends house, saw a massive bottle of whiskey on the counter .. Oh I could have some of that. Plagued all the way home with 'just be normal like everyone else and have a couple of drinks.. Stop taking this no drinking thing so seriously'. Nightmare.

Went out for dinner during week totally stressed about the first round of drinks - 10 people all of them and I mean all either had a coke or a water! Only I was gagging to drink the bar. I could tell by my inner turmoil that 1 drink would never be enough. Such a scary feeling. At the table swallowed the oysters drowned in champagne. Then I honestly did think oh well may as well get drunk now and call some friends and see who's up for a night on the town.

I didn't. But it was the closest to sliding into the pit I've ever been.
I should have recognised the whiskey bottle as the trigger and been on guard from there.

Tread carefully

Just give yourself a break, brynn. I can go to casinos now - but I wouldn't go if I was feeling conflicted. You've been conflicted all week.

Drinking and gambling create the same speedy-buzzy feeling - and you've linked them in your mind, so I think it's a bad idea for you if you are conflicted.

Wow, I finally passed a practice exam! Feeling pretty good about that.

There's a party tonight for a guy at work who is getting promoted. It's called a 'wetting down' in the military. Sort of a throwback to the days when excessive drinking was more acceptable than it is now. The promoted person throws some cash down on the bar and the guests drink until it is gone. I'll try to get my money's worth in ginger ale.

Ordinarily I'd pass (not my bag anymore, baby) , but this guy works for me, so kind of a social faux pas for me not to go. I'll go early and leave early. Nobody wants the boss there late anyway.

Keep it safe and sober tonight peeps!

Lazier today than I should be. Got three novels from the library and went to the grocery store. Haven't touched the laundry. Oh well.

Bought one of those zero-gravity loungers for the back deck. Garden looks spectacular this year. It has been a few years since we planted it, so it is starting to mature. We don't need to fight off the weeds as much either.

Well...I could get out of it, but I'm not going to. He's a good dude and he invited me to his party. I'll go and have some wings or cocktail franks or whatever the (nasty) bar food is and drink some ginger ale. I've got the still on (post-surgery) meds excuse if I need it. (My problem with alcohol is not public information.)

Feeling good. I've got this. I was never a public drinker anyway.

And you're a good dude too.
