New to this world

Hi all, I am new to this world of alcoholism and recovery. My dad is an alcoholic and I'm struggling with how to help him or talk to him about things. We live many states away. He lives at home with my mom and adult sister. He went through a detox program and had been sober since September...until yesterday. I talk to my family about once a week, and today my dad told me he had a slip and had a drink yesterday. I'm not sure what the circumstances were. He was disappointed in himself. I told him genuinely that I knew he could get back on track, but wasn't sure what else to say. I was disappointed too since he had been doing so well - going to regular AA meetings, seeing a therapist weekly. I've never seen our family happier than after he got sober. Of course I realized a relapse could happen (would happen?) but it just scares me. I don't want to see him go back to the way things used to be..... Thanks for listening.

Welcome to the family! I'm sorry for the circumstances that bring you here. There's lots of support here so take advantage of it. We also have a 'friends and family' forum for those who have a loved one who is an alcoholic. Lots of insight there from people who understand.

Good to meet you RedDog. I'm sorry for the upset your father's alcoholism has caused your family. You aren't alone - many share the same situation. I think it'll help you to be here.

Hi reddog

I hope you'll read around and see there is lasting recovery, even if many of us faltered a time or two in the beginning. Best wishes to you,. and to your dad too
