Never thought I'd be here

I'm currently struggling with the "mental obsession" part of alcoholism. I recently suffered through 3 days of dreadful alcohol detox so I could be present for our family trip to Disneyland Resort in CA. The trip is now over (it was great!) but now all I can think about is Svedka Strawberry Lemonade. I have enough sense to know this is not a normal thought at 4:35 AM!!

Welcome, Pam. Check out the stickies at the top of the forum, you'll find lots of good information for making a plan and riding out the urges. You don't ever have to go through detox again.

Welcome Pam, congrats on making it through 3 days!

Have some strawberry lemonade, just skip the alcohol....it tastes better without anyway!

I love your screen name, PamChowder!

The chowder part is great - I think many of us here can relate as our brains were a "soup" of so many thoughts and impulses.

As we gain some sobriety we find the noise quiets and we don't have to act on the impulses. The mental obsession softens - at around 60 days for me it was gone. I had to get enough time for this to happen and retrain the synapse into different habits = ice cream.............

So, now I have gained a few pounds (most lose weight!) but I have also gained 11 months - today - of sober one day at a times. You can to!!

When the obsession hit me I would simply acknowledge it but not respond. Yea, I hear you.......I may drink tomorrow - but not today. Today I am Sober - I am not a victim if I drink but a volunteer.

Today, I am not signing up for duty.........There's no lack of volunteers - I have done my part and am out.

Today, I do not drink!

Glad you're here - welcome.

Welcome to SR, PamChowder. I, too, love your username - very clever.

Hang tight; sobriety gets easier, with time, and eventually the true joys and benefits will become evident and form a core, an essence, to your new life.

Again, welcome; you will find a lot of support here.

Welcome Pam! The longer you're sober, the more those thoughts of drinking will fade.

Hi Pam....welcome! The beginning is tough, but many here are proof that it is possible to get through. Just keep on abstaining one day at a time, read and post here often, and before you know it you'll accumulate some time. The more time you have...the easier it gets! And then you will be free from all of alcohol s clutches.

Yes, I stopped drinking for 10+ years. I have issues with both food and alcohol. When I abstained from addictive eating, I also abstained from alcohol. All that went to hell in a hand basket a month ago when I decided I was tired of weighing and measuring all my food. Of course that led to thinking I could handle Svedka Strawberry Lemonade. Wrong!!
