Hey cursed, at least you are here trying again. What is it you want to know about AA? There's lots a of folks right here that can probably answer your questions.

Do you know how WD-40 got its name? Because WD-39, 38, 37, 36, 35, 34, 33, 32, 31, 30, 29, 28, 27, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, & 1 didn't work. It took many tries, but what matters is that they kept trying until that one worked.

"Learned again" contains both truth and value. You learned you need to be doing more than you had been doing to get the alcohol monkey off your back.

The alcoholic living in my head loves to call me a failure. Makes it easier to control me in the future when my self-respect and determination are shot full of holes.

You're here and you're still trying. That is NOT what failure looks like.

Well said Nonsensical. The fact that you are asking for help here is massive. It indicates an underlying will that has NOT failed and wishes to succeed. It doesn't matter how many keys you try till you find the one that unlocks the door...

Maybe like me you learnt you couldn't do this alone. That's what drove me to AA.
I went to a few different meetings and found some suited me more than others - different suburbs = different styles of people.
I find all are friendly and welcoming. I'm not religious and that doesn't matter to most people there.
It's not just support. I find comfort and listening to the crazy thoughts of others like 'how can i live without drinking' 'i can control this' 'without drink I won't fit in' and other common fears i have comforting and empowering. Alcoholism is a mental disease and AA like other groups is where you'll find survivers who know and understand your every thought and fear.

There are a bunch of folks here with a lot better advice than me and I'm proud of you for reaching out!

I do have a minor piece of advice though. Consider changing your user name.

I recognize there may be a personal and valid reason for your choice and am certainly not trying to take away from that. I also recognize I am projecting here.

I just don't want you, or any who respond to your posts, to label you that way. The journey is challenging in its own right- and while mining for support and inspiration my hope is that you recognize how blessed you are to have the courage to keep fighting.

Thank you all. I have realized I can't do it alone so will check around for AA meetings. I plan to change my user name too ... My personal challenge is to change it after my first sober month.

This is great news, amigo.

These meetings, and working the AA program, have sure worked for me.

And I experienced years of failure before I finally surrendered and asked for help.

Cursed, change your name now, not after a month. Why beat yourself down with a negative? Do you remember or even watch the Pebbles and Bam Bam cartoons with Bad Luck Schleprock walking around with the cloud of doom over head?
