I have to try

Hello. I have been drinking heavily pretty much every day for about 6 years. I have been unable to quit for long periods of time since 2009. I have never considered myself an alcoholic though.
Today I found out that I have a severe B1 (thyamine) deficiency which usually only happens with alcoholism.
The reason that I had blood tests done were because I had some weird symptoms including neuropathy of my legs.
My doctor said he wanted me to do an alcohol screening to determine what level treatment I needed. This in my case would effect my career. I begged him not to and he said if I can get my thiamine level up after a couple months we would revisit.
So long story long, today I have to quit drinking. I am not looking forward to it but I need to make this a lifelong change. Truth is, I don't want to. I am really scared. Just wanted to get that off my chest. Afraid to tell people because I am afraid I will be judged.
Thanks for listening.

Glad you found your way here!

There's tons of great posts to read through and stories of the different ways people have stayed sober.

Lots of support around here as well, no matter what your story is.

Best advice is to make yourself a plan.

I think you're smart to get sober. I did over five years ago and don't regret a minute of it. :)

I hope you'll make good use of the awesome support we have here. :)
