Feeling kinda down.

I hurt my right knee last year and to this day it is still not what it used to be so I am constantly overcompensating for it with my "good" left knee. Well my left knee is going on me now too.... it is all swollen and sore and hurts worse than my right knee.

I'm only 36. I used to be so active before I got hurt last year! I can't have both knees give up on me! It's been bothering me since last Thursday but I have just been hoping it would get better on it's own.... no such luck. I just booked a doctors appt.

At least my knees are symmetrical now

Last year when I was off work hurt I really stepped up my drinking cuz I was home and depressed.... I really don't want to end up in that place again.

I'm sorry to hear about your knees but I'm glad you're going to the doctors.

Being at home for whatever reason and not having a regular routine can really step up the drinking. I have been out of work and can relate a lot.

Yeah it's easy to do when you don't have anything to be accountable to. The boredom alone is enough.

Plus being in constant pain and discomfort it's easy to turn to something to make me feel better. I bough percs off a guy I know this weekend even though I've never been into pills before.... but it just sucks to hurt all the time.

It's depressing.

I can't stop worrying about the future too. If this is what my knees are like at 36 how will they be at 46? 66?

I'm not obese or out of shape either. I work out regularly doing a routine that is kind to my knees, swimming or the ellipitcal plus weights.

I'm worried that I won't be able to walk and get around.

You've got an appointment with your GP and that's a great first step. You don't need to worry about what you will be like at 46 or 66 as you may well have entirely different treatment by then and you won't be in the position you are today :-)

Zen, I'm really sorry. Living in pain is just miserable and being concerned about your mobility is a big deal. I totally understand the overcompensating thing. It's what our bodies do naturally to try to help us, but it seems to always end up causing more damage.

My suggestion is to get to a physiotherapist who can help you find ways to exercise and help your knees. The doctors appointment is a good place to start.

Try not to worry until you have too. When you actually get to the moment, you may not have the same anxiety as you are having now about the future. Also, you are stronger, healthier, and sober, you will heal so much faster!

It is a big deal Anna. I'm having to take the stairs one at a time..... Having one bad knee was unfortunate but having them both go will be devastating.

Soberwolf I don't take cod liver oil but I also take MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) with glucosamine. I never really notice a big difference taking supplements though. The best thing I've found for my knee, now knees is exercise and making the muscles supporting my joints stronger.

I haven't been to the gym in the last few days because I'm afraid of doing more damage. I'll see what my doctor says. I booked an appt with my knee specialist too but he's hard to get in to see so it's not for a few weeks. I'll likely be sent for an ultrasound and x-ray and MRI like I was last summer.

Can't say that I'm not thinking about drinking over it.

I understand the knee issues....I tore my right PCL years ago racing...Right knee has not been the same since ..

I was at my son's soccer game a few weeks ago and someone kicked the ball out..It started to roll down a hill so I ran for it trying to help out ..

Durnitol , didn't my right knee just fold inwards on me and I rolled down that hill flat on my back, much to the entertainment of a a soccer field full of players and fans...

Hey Zen,

I think we might have something in common. I'm 36 myself and injured right knee when I was 16. Now my left is catching up. Just wanted you to know you are not alone. Drinking will not make it any better or help your body do any healing it needs to do either. Going back to "That place" can't be an option.

Keep your head up.

I had ACL reconstruction surgery about 14 years ago and my right knee still gives me trouble. It swells and I have to ice it and baby it. I don't worry about 10-12 years from now except to say I think about how much technology has advanced in terms of knee replacement, partials, and even injections. I would just concentrate on resting, icing, and seeing your doc. Good luck!

Nofearnobear lol rolling down the hill must have been pretty comical for everyone but you I'd imagine!

The first knee started out as a sprain/ligament tear but once the MRI came back it turned out to be worse.... severe cartilage loss and chrondosis of the joint. I could live with that. It sucked and changed my performance at work... I've been on modified ever since. It also changed how I live and perceive myself.... I have a different mobility now, I can't do the things I used to be able to do. But I was working around it.

Now to have both knees give up on me is just the worst! It's so unfair! Such a bummer.

Oh well. I know there is nothing anyone can do and I know I'm just being a big whiner. I also know I haven't seen a doctor yet and don't have a diagnosis but having already been down this path last year I already feel kinda defeated.

I was talking to a co-worker today who recommended me to a different specialist so I can go and get a second opinion.

Thanks so the support and for listening.
