kombucha

What are your guys thoughts on kombucha for people in recovery? I am just curious, I know recovered folks who drink it no problem, those who avoid it just in case, and those who have one sip and feel tipsy.

I eat well and drink lots of water. No need for kombucha for me, plus it is not proven to be effective. The ill effects outweigh any positives that are promoted for it.

Tried it a few times. Really wasn't that great, got a stomach ache/bloated, and the research is really all over the place with it.

Like sugar bear said, eating well and plenty of water do it for me.

I drink kombucha from time to time. Even played with making my own here and there. I like it, it's tasty and healthy and doesn't have an effect on me in terms of its negligible alcohol content.

That's just my experience.

My son is a kombucha home-brewer. He loves the stinky stuff. I have done a lot of research regarding the alcohol, but I believe you'd have to do many fermentations before getting any alcohol content. My son is on Antabuse and it doesn't react at all, so I believe it's safe. It smells like vinegar, and somehow carbonates during the process. As far as the health benefits, I don't believe anything is proven.

Day 25. Had a bottle of kombucha last week, no problem.
Had 1/3 today different brand and don't know if related, but my face is red and my entire body is itching.
No alcohol content according to label and online.
Just a warning for everyone. Maybe its paws, or something else, but why take the risk?

I drink kombucha everyday. The probiotics in it help quite a bit with my digestion. Many of the hormones that regulate mood are produced in the digestive tract, and when my digestion is off, my anxiety and depression are less manageable. That's my two cents anyway.

I keep a bottle in my fridge, and I take two large swigs after dinner. I have no issues with it. I didn't even know it contains trace amounts of alcohol until a few weeks ago. It certainly doesn't cause me to crave alcohol.

I like the probiotics and I don't consume dairy, so I use Kombucha instead of yogurt.

But everyone is different, so it's a personal decision.

I like it and it doesn't trigger me.

I don't drink it every day, but enjoy some when on sale at the health store

I have kombucha from time to time. Commercial kombucha is regulated and has only trace alcohol. It's a fermented beverage, and has probiotic benefits and tastes good and is a healthy non-alcoholic beverage alternative to sodas.

That said, homemade kombucha can be dangerous territory. I made a batch one time and it wound up basically kombucha wine. One taste and I knew it was bad news. I gave it away to a friend.

For many in recovery, kombucha can be a 'playing with fire' kind of thing. I haven't found it to be problematic or lead to cravings, but now and then even a commercial kombucha has left me feeling a little dry-mouthed and 'odd in the head'.... so I don't drink it too frequently. I don't like that feeling. I don't want to feel the effects of alcohol in my life anymore. And, I have heard stories of people in recovery who have had kombucha and it set them off on a binge and relapse cycle.

So.... proceed with caution. If at all.

I like it and drink a few a week. Doesn't make me feel weird, or crave alcohol in any way at all. Worst thing about it for me is it's kind of expensive.
