No More Wine Glasses!

Last night, I threw away all of my wine glasses...even my favorite (hand-painted) glass by a local artist. I didn't think it'd be a hard thing to do, but it was a bit hard for me to throw away the painted one (because I love art, it was a beautiful glass...and it was expensive!), but figured I could just buy a wall painting instead.

Here's to another Day 1, that could have been Day 5 if I didn't give in on Friday but try, try, again, right?

Did you drink alcohol from those art glasses?

Just wondering.

I also threw away wine glasses altho
mine were cheap. If your art glasses
have other meaning to them and not
because they were your favorite drinking
glasses, then I would keep them or let
someone hold them for you till you've
acquired some good strong sobriety time
behind you.

If you are an artist and a deep
luv for art, hold onto it, especially
if they are signed by the artists.

Glad you are back. Sometimes you have to try something different instead of just trying harder or trying the same thing. Any ideas on what you might change this time?

I've still got mine, and it's been 3 years now. But my guests do bring a bottle of what they like to drink, so I need glasses to serve in. It's more than that though, I've just always loved their shape.

@aasharon: Yes, I used it to drink wine out of--it was my only hand-painted glass and it was my favorite. (It's not signed, just had pictures of different attractions from my favorite city.)
I threw it away because everytime I look at it, I'm tempted to drink. I didn't want to do it but it was something I knew I had to do.

@scott: Hhhmm, I'm not sure what I'm going to do differently. I'm usually tempted to drink on Monday (the stress of going back to work!) and Friday. I've started running Monday-Friday so the only thing I can think of is run in the evening. Usually, when I run in the evening, I'm less tempted to drink; especially if I had to go to work because I'm too tired to do so.

Ref tempted on Friday: I signed up for an 8:00am intense workout session on Saturday.

Any other ideas?

@FeelingGreat: I'm new to the city and don't really know anyone--which is why I've talked about being bored in previous threads--so I'm pretty much the only one who used the wine glasses.

I did the same thing when I moved (I also had some nice hand-painted ones). Same with my beer coozies (even the monogrammed ones & the Lilly Pulitzer one). It was so empowering to throw them as hard as I could into a dumpster & watch them shatter. Very cathartic.

Congrats on Day 1!

That is so funny, I could NOT let go of a wine glass I had painted. My last relapse I was drunk and knocked it off the counter and it shattered...that was my sign.

Many thanks to everyone! And, SoberWolf, thank you for the site. I also need to learn about AV because that's what usually "tricks me" despite my best intentions. I need to be prepared.

Flawed: Lol!!! I totally understand... Yesterday, I literally stood in my kitchen staring at the wine glass (after I said I'd throw it away!) and all of these thoughts went through my mind:
-I can't throw this one away. It's too pretty.
-Wow! This was kind of expensive for a wine glass--surely I can't toss it.
-Hhm. Maybe I'll just keep it out of sight?
-Ugh!! Even the container it came in is pretty!!

Then I just laughed at myself and thought, "Wow!"
So I made myself toss it... Lol @ you breaking yours on accident. #Destiny

Way to go on tossing the wine glasses!!

I can still remember how good it felt when I got rid of all of mine. (I sent them all with my alcoholic ex when he moved out of the house.) I love the idea of buying a piece of art for the wall instead.

I find breaking the habits that go along with drinking are just as difficult as not drinking. The more of those habits you can discard before you're tempted to drink, the more successful you will be in remaining sober.

Back up - Lilly Pulitzer beer coozies? Did I read that right?

Good work SoberRunner - sounds like you're committed to making significant changes.

You sure did. For the preppy alcoholic. I also had monogrammed ones.

I use mine for juice and candle holders. They are too pretty to toss out.

I couldn't throw mine away either....too pretty.
I CAN give them away or sell for cheap at the upcoming neighborhood garage sale though....

And I did put them all on the top shelf to make room for all my tall club soda glasses!

Had no problem throwing out the cooler cups for beer though...they are just not pretty!

Probably a good idea SR! I kept mine & I had Irish Coffee mugs & beer steins too. They kind of annoy me up there on the top shelf. I did get rid of a set of expensive glasses a friend gave me years ago - each one said 'Name your poison' and then the name of a poison like Arsenic. Funny.......not.

Although I'm not a runner (save for some on the treadmill at the Y), I live in a metro area full of them, including a few I know. It has always struck me as a community that's pretty focused on their shared hobby. And pretty inclusive. Have you looked into any runners clubs?

Glad to see I'm not the only one who had trouble throwing away their favorite glasses!

@Venecia: I've looked into a couple of running clubs... I just have to make myself meet up with them one day.
