so far so good but for how much longer

Hi, Im trying to find some identification and a better understanding of what I am experiencing. I have self mediated for 15 years on alcohol illegal drugs but for the last 2years I've been trying to be abstinent. This however has exposed some hidden mental health problems and I'm struggling. While I'm determined to stop using and for periods of time it seems that the longer I am free the more problems become apparent. Such as depression, anxiety, and just recently disassociation disorder and aspergers syndrome. This is scarey but such a relief. Having read some literature on the above it finally makes sense. I have a long way to go and only 8 months clean and sober now that I have a few answers I pray that it will get easier. I'm so grateful to the fellowships for they have got me this far.

Hello and welcome.
I , too, struggle with serious mental health issues. I self medicated, with mainly alcohol, for twenty years. I became an alcoholic and a serious one.
I knew there was something wrong with me besides the alcohol problem, but it took me years to get help.
When I finally did, I still drank alcoholicly for five years. It took going to AA, as I did by seeking help from a psychiatrist, that I was finally able to quit.
I couldn't solve my mental health problems without help, and I coudn't get sober without help.

8 months is great. It took me many tries to make it that long, so congratulations, well done.
I pray, too and it has helped me immensly.
Best to you and stick around, you'll find a lot of support here.

Hi and congratulations on your 8 months.
Over many years I’ve witnessed many people recover from ailments they thought were permanent by following the program to the best of their ability and accepting professional help along the way if needed. This was only possible only because they became sober.

BE WELL

Welcome Lostsoul,

I'm glad that you recognize some of the underlying problems that helped cause your addiction. By dealing with those issues, you will ensure your recovery. Have you talked to a dr about your mental health issues? Congratulations on your recovery.
