Fighting Depression
Fighting Depression
Lots of disappointments today. My son says that he and his family will not be able to attend our 60th wedding anniversary because they must be back in the Midwest at that time. Can't go with me to my old high school reunion (my 70th!) because he'll be in England. Have only a few friends locally who might attend at Anniversary time. My wife and I are the only ones on record on either side of the family who have been married 60 years. Am pretty depressed for other reasons, such as differences with my wife about moving into a retirement facility for three or four months a year. We need more friends, more people to talk to rather than just ourselves.
If I were drinking over all this, I'd be dead what with all the blood pressure meds I take. So I do four things: pet my dog, order up some escape reading, watch travel stuff on TV and post on this website. If I can help someone out who has a lot more trouble than I have then it makes me feel a lot better. Thanks for being there.

Hi Bill,
Congratulations on your upcoming 60th Wedding Anniversary. That is so special. I'm sorry your son is disappointing you, but I hope that you and your wife will be able to do something special.
I'm glad you have some escape plans and I know how much you love your beautiful dog.

Congrats on your 60th anniversary! That is incredible! I've read that depression can come up in our golden years for many reasons, including loss of independence. You are blessed with a loving companion of 60 years, your pup and children who love you. Stay strong!
I have no tips on love and marriage. I see love in my dog's eyes. I am sometimes a little scared when I sense that he knows. He somehow understands and is there for me. My wife also. I owe her so much for standing by me for all these sixty years when many wives might have not done so. But now her health concerns occupy so much of her mind that she has changed. I know that she is afraid of dying and particularly if she would die painfully. Her wishes in her health care directive will be followed. If I do not die first, I will do everything in my power which the law permits to make sure that she does not suffer. Love is being there. It is the only reality, at least the only thing that matters. The rest is little more than an illusion, a dream. The "ten thousand things", not the Tao.

Congrats on your anniversary. I'm sorry your son can't be there.
I do two of your four things when I get depressed; I pet my dogs and visit SR. And nine times out of ten, it makes me feel better. A dog walk works very well also.

I'm sorry you have to struggle with this, W. Health stuff can use up a lot our mental and emotional "bandwidth". I wish you and your wife good health. I hope too that you can find common ground on the retirement home issue.
It's a shame that your kids can't be there for the 60th anniversary. That's such an incredible milestone! Hopefully there are other ways to share it with people. If nothing else I hope your son can get together with you and your wife at another time.
Lastly, I'm glad you're here with us! It helps to have a steady sober presence, especially someone like you that's managed many years sober.
