What value did/does alcohol add... What positive value, if any, did alcohol add to your life? |
This should be a short thread. I'm pretty sure everyone here has nothing left in the plus column. |
Alcohol helped me to isolate myself completely so that I could sit and be drunk without being bothered by "friends". It also helped me to stagnate and not make any positive progress in my life. It helped me to get over my sense of being human and learn to hate myself for the scum I was. Pretty awesome. |
Welcome to SR! As soon as I realized the answer was 'none', I knew everything was going to be OK and I felt free. When I took a good, hard, honest look at my life I could see that the price exacted for its presence was fairly hefty...unparalleled. |
Let's see..... If you can't read anything, that's sums it well. LOL! |
Nothing. Looking back, any benefit I perceived at the time could have been gained without alcohol, and in many cases gained in a bigger/better way. |
Nothing that I miss! |

Alcohol helped me destroy my marriage, my family, my friendships and my health. It has been the best frenemy a girl could ask for. When I learned that alcohol gave nothing in my plus side, I finally could release it. Anyone who says moderation after being a drunk and alcoholic, who binges or alienates people and acts like a lunatic, well, those people aren't ready to release alcohol yet. When I was that way, I paid lip service to get my husband to forgive me but I really didn't want to stop...there was still some belief in my head that it gave me something positive. Now I know better. |
I once used methylated spirit to clean a paint splatter off a cupboard. Other than that it's caused nothing but pain. |
^^^ chuckle of the day. Thanks. So true! |
Well, it helped me get rid of that pesky liver and pancreas. |
Alcohol gave me nothing good. All it gave me was bad things. :( I'm so glad I don't drink anymore. :) |
None, it always took away. |
In terms of positive & negative alcohol is a depressent so its negative Did it change my life ? yes only for the worse the only good that came because of my alcoholism was my recovery Nice to meet you btw |
Does everyone really feel there was nothing positive from their drinking? I'm so envious if that's true! I hate what alcohol has done to me (or what alcoholism has, I should say) but as a very anxious person even with meds(not as bad now) there's a lot of things I don't think I'd have had the courage to do without a few drinks. That doesn't mean it's the same now, because it has progressed to where I would almost instantly drink the entire bottle and become a mess instead of a little more confident, but I think without drinking ever I probably would have been far more isolated and alone than I am now and I don't think I would have gone to uni for 6 years or accepted some amazing opportunities. Not trying to glamourise it, the negatives farr FAR outweigh the positives, but I don't think I could say there was nothing good from it... |
Alcohol gave my 25 y.o. son a DUI and nice, cold jail cell to sober up in. Since then it has given him driver service from his middle-aged parents everywhere he goes. Wow, he's like celebrity! Sorry, I'm feeling very sarcastic these days. |
It made me realise my life is better off without it. |
It taught me humility, and gave me an understanding my limitations. I am not invincible after all. |
