Hello all
There are some good suggestions here (ignore the title it works for most social occasions)
Crying Out Now: Thanksgiving Survival Guide
I can;t stress enough the thinking ahead part.
If you're known as a drinker have a response really for when someone asks you if you want a drink or asks you why you're not drinking...
the reason doesn't have to be a long essay about your alcoholism with you standing on a table making a speech...something like 'I don't feel like it', 'for my health' I'm driving' are all valid reasons.
Have an escape plan too just in case it all gets too much- it's ok to be seen to be there...and then leave after a little while.

Very good advice. The only issue I see is I can't just show face and leave type of this because it is a small meeting with stakeholders (who drink like fish). We have to discuss some business related planning etc.
So it isn't the type of thing I can escape out the back door. But I def appreciate that ideas.
I think you're right that planning is the best route.
One time I was sober for like 2 months and a business associate really pressured me to drink. I was in China and over there the pressure is very strong.
This will be similar except a bit easier I guess. (In the west theee isn't as much of an emphasis on drinking for business)

You could tell them you're on medication that doesn't allow you to drink. You can think up some innocuous reason you'd be on medication beforehand in case they want more detail.
I would always just tell people (even co-workers) that I don't drink anymore. But this is the one scenario where I would use a different tactic. A white lie here might not be a bad play. Just don't allow them to pressure you to drink.
