Your guard has to be up all the time, especially in social settings. The bottom line is we all have free will, so there is a degree of choice despite any physical dependence that has developed. I don't think most people progress to the "hopeless and lost" stage without serious serious substance abuse, i think most people only make it to the "heavy drinker" stage before it somehow affects them and prompts change. That's what I have observed on these boards anyway, lots and lots of "heavy" drinkers with the occasional "extreme" case.
By the way, for any new people, you may have a few alcohol-related dreams early on..... these are normal apparently. The dreams will feel very real, but remember they are just that - dreams. I had about 4 such dreams sprinkled throughout 2014, i woke up shaken...... but quickly realized it was just a dream. Just thought I would give that quick heads up.
It seems alcohol somehow mysteriously "implants" itself in the sub-conscious, since the sub-conscious is where dreams are believed to originate.
Strange strange condition........
