Ashamed and ready to quit

Hi,

I have been drinking daily for the most part of last 10 years. My drinking habits are getting worse and whenever at home I try to sneak in drinks any time of the day. My wife is very frustrated and we have huge arguments whenever I get drunk. I had some relatives visiting from out of country and I made a fool of myself getting drunk by sneaking in drinks all day. I feel ashamed. I do not want to continue like this. Just threw all the drink I had down the sink. Hopefully I can be strong to go thru this. My journey to sobriety starts now.

Good decision. Lots of resources here, and AA works wonders for some.

Hopefully, I will be stronger this time. Unfortunately, wife is out of town and being alone at home, I know I will be tempted to go buy some alcohol. Gotta resist!!

There will always be an excuse and a temptation Hun. I'm on my own with my daughter and so many times I've thought 'I can have a drink and no one will know' but...I will know!! Just because your wife isn't there your doing this for you above anything else so keep thinking of why your doing this and don't give in!! Xx

Welcome Tushar! We're so glad to have you with us.

SR helped me find the courage to change my life. I'd been drinking over 30 yrs., and in the end it was all day. Being here with those who understood and didn't judge meant everything to me. You can do it!

I think I lost all respect from the family. I have been relatively successful in life. All my relatives used to look up to me doing the right things, finishing higher degree, have a great job at a large company, married for 20+ yrs, kids off to college. But I keep disappointing everyone around me by going back to drinking and getting drunk. I have to stop.

Hi Tushar,

Most of us here have done things we greatly regret while we were drinking. Know for sure that you can change your life and be the person you want to be.

Just make sure you look forward. You haven't meant to disappoint anyone (tho I know that doesn't make it any better). I've done some really shaming things when drunk and feel awful for worrying my family but thinking back to that will just make us feel awful...and what do we do when we feel bad?? Vicious circle. Just think how proud they will be (and even more important how proud of yourself you'll feel) when you do this :-)
You know you have to stop so do it from now! You CAN do it!! Xx

Thanks Jaded. Just the shame is too much. But I will not let it make me pick another one.

Welcome. Glad you are here. You have made the first step in getting help. Do you have a quit plan? Any activities you can do the next time you feel like you need to drink?

That's the attitude you need! The shame may be overwhelming but you're not using it as an excuse to drink. The more hours and days you're sober the more proud you'll feel and that will start overpowering the awful memories xx

There is a lot of good information here. Are you drinking today/tonight?

No I do not plan to drink today or ever. I want to make sure I keep that plan. Too many times I thought I can have just one, it never stays at one.

Congrats on your decision to quit drinking. I would caution you that alcohol drinking can be dangerous and because you drank daily and sounds as if its all day. You may consider seeing a doctor and especially see a doctor if you start experiencing withdrawal. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the word of caution. I did quit several times for a few days in the past. Did not really get too much withdrawal symptoms, except maybe too much sweating at night. I will look around here for withdrawal symptoms to watch out for.
