17 days sober

Hi, I stopped drinking 17 days ago. I didn't drink everyday, but mostly on the weekends, and maybe Thursday nights.

My problem is that when I had 1 drink, I would want to drink 10-15 drinks. Even on the days when I wasn't drinking, I was thinking about it constantly.

I have atrial fibrillation, which is a heart problem, and I am bipolar, so I have 2 huge health reasons not to drink, but I thought I would learn to control myself... mmm... not so much.

So I decided (and was told by my wife) to stop drinking, so here I am.

Hello and welcome.
Bipolar here, too. I used alcohol to self-medicate for many years. It stabilized my moods into being drunk, which I thought I could handle rather than the mood swings.
I could never control myself, either. Never saw the point of it- I drank to get drunk and after the first one, there was no telling when it would end.
This led to every day drinking. And I turned into a drunk. Alcohol didn't help with the mood swings anymore. I was wild and out of control. It made the illness worse.

Good for you (and your wife) on deciding to quit. Bipolar is eminently treatable sober.
I found the right meds after many trials and now I'm stable and happily sober.
Best to you on your journey. You can do it. You'll also find a lot of support here, so post away. You're not alone in your struggles.

Glad you're here, friend - Welcome!

What else besides not drinking are you doing as your plan for sobriety?

Great to meet you tributcher.

It's not how often we drink, but what it does to us when we do drink. Once it was in my system, I had no control over what might happen. I'm glad you're making this big change in your life. We're with you.

I'm being treated for my bipolar and my depression, and I'm seeing a psychiatrist.

If I don't have that first drink, I don't really crave it, so my #1 thing is "Don't have that first one... " :)
