I've killed several animals with my car and it's gut-wrenching. It was an accident, sweetheart. Try not to think about it. I used to start singing to myself when I would remember particularly painful things - it helps. ((hug))

So sorry that happened.

That's the owner's fault.

I'm really sorry. Be strong. It's not your fault.

I was thinking about you the other day, wondering how you were doing. Don't drink tonight, even if you have to focus on each hr, minute, second. So sorry about the cat, that took a lot of courage to contact the owner in person.
Sending you good vibes and thoughts

I'm really sorry JG - but honestly it sounds like you did everything you could.
Take care of yourself, ok?

Years ago I ran over a beautiful collie that belonged to my neighbor. Total accident. Her knee jerk reaction was to scream at me and tell me what a jerk I was etc. I got that. I felt horrible. I can still see that dog laying in the street in my mind's eye all these years later. It took some time, but I was finally able to forgive myself. This is very fresh and it will hurt for some time. But you began the healing process when you alerted the owner. Be kind to yourself.

Owner's fault entirely. That being said I know it can be hard knowing an animal died. I ran over a raccoon on the highway once and could see it in my rear view mirror flying through the air. Felt bad for a bit but nothing you can do, right?

You are a kind person to let the owner know.

Had you been drinking you wouldn't have stopped, let the owner know, or even cared.

If anything can help now, it's ice cream. Go get some.

Hi JG . You have great responses here already. I just want to agree - you did nothing wrong - the kitty shouldn't have been out there to run in front of your car, since it had owners who cared about it. Proud of you for getting through this without numbing yourself. It's best to deal with the emotions with a clear head - then we can grieve and move on, instead of letting it fester.

Glad you wanted to talk it over with us - I love how SR works.

Through no fault of your own you've been placed in a very difficult situation. Again, through no fault of your own.

What really resonated with me was that you contacted the owner; many would have just kept on going. That you did so speaks volumes about your character; you're a good person and this accident, as sad as it may be for all involved, and it is, does not diminish that. Stay strong!

The accident happened because of the pet owners negligence. It's not worth drinking over. You did the right thing. You sound like a very caring person.

You didn't do anything wrong..you went the extra mile to find and tell the owner some people wouldn't. I know it's a horrible feeling. At least the owners know and don't have to wonder. Perhaps they will reconsider letting pets roam free. You should be proud of the way you handled yourself.

Oh Jaded,
Huge hugs. You didn't mean to do it, of course and animals are so unpredictable on the road. Forgive yourself and know that you did the right thing by stopping and talking to the family.
Prayers and hugs to you.

Like the others said, Cats belong inside and its unfortunate but the pet owners bare the brunt of the responsibility. But look at it like this, without your sobriety would you have been able to go to their door and do the right thing? The burden of responsibility is off of your shoulders.

Don't drink. The guilt will pass. It was an accident. But you did the right thing and are a very caring person.

I don't agree with others that say cats belong indoors. I have two and they come and go as they please. They need some time outside too!

Hang in there. I hope you feel better soon.

Contacting the owners must of taken so much courage! Good on you. Many folks would have driven on.
Imagine if this accident happened while you were drinking?
You were sober and did the very best action one could take.
You should feel proud.
