I am Iron(wo)Man...

Hello everyone my name is Saliena and I am a low bottom drunk. Not just a bottom drunk I am the stuff that settles on the bottom and just kinda stays there... stuck junky and stink and gross.

3 years ago I got my second and third DUIs. I was at the lowest point in my life court order DUI court. Peeing in a cup 4-7 times a week. Attending classes, AA, and jumping , how high Sir? May I have another? Only thing that kept me going was that in a year I could have a drink. I could get back to the friends I left at the bar. I could do what I was doing... I could go back to killing myself slowly with one sip at a time of that sweet sweet poison.

Oddly somewhere along the way I started listening to those stories in AA because my phone was no longer entertaining to me. My thinking became clear, more focused. I found that maybe if I clean up my body and my mind it would be easier for me to control my drinking.

I found a really small gym in my neighborhood. I started taking a spin class, kept pissing in cups, I started running 10 seconds of and 10 seconds off. I started feeling good, I started to enjoy (how the hell that happened I have no idea). I listened more to the women in AA and I made friends. While the people at the bar stopped calling a long time ago. The people in AA wanted to hang out with me when I was SOBER. Seriously do people do that? I mean REALLY... People do that!

The people at my gym started to challenge me... sign up for a 5K, then it was GREAT... sign up for a 10k, wow you are awesome!! Go for a 1/2 marathon... Loved it feeling amazing. Understanding how my body works and how I can be here and present and feel god in me.

So, at the end of that court date... I was able to drive again, I was given every freedom to go out and have a drink ... just one.. you can moderate that voice kept telling me. YOU CAN DO THIS! MODERATE!!

Instead I laced up my tennis shoes and I went for a run. I have been running from the idea of moderation ever since this. I hope today that I am just one day away from my next drink. I can have that tomm.

Now I am getting ready to do an IronMan!!! I am so excited 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run... Getting it done!

3 years 1 month and 17 days later.

You are awesome!!! I'm so glad you replaced your drinking with exercise. I quit drinking January 1, 2014 and have run a 50K biked the same, running a 55K on Valentines (weird, huh) and am training to run a 50 miler. I have a lot of time to think during training and I often wonder what I am running from. I think its safe to say, I'm running from my old self/life. I'm fine with that.

This is such a wonderful post to read. Hopefully others will understand that, even though things look very bad at the moment, there is always the option to change. There is always hope.
