Reminder of why im getting sober

Just got a call one of my dads friends just passed away.... Spent a lot of time with him growing up... 65 years old. Heavy drinker too, big overtime worker before retirement. Not that drinking caused it but if it did or didn't it doesn't matter just that life work 12 hrs, drunk all weekend and every day after work and a 4 year retirement spent mostly drunk. He was a happy guy a good guy but damn that's not where I want to be in 35 years....

Sorry about your lost. Alcohol and overwork are a deadly mix. The perfect storm for a heart attack or something bad. Everyone should retire at some point and be able to grow old and enjoy life.

Was back in my hometown this past weekend and saw my late dad's best friend. He is recovering from liver transplant. Great guy, but I almost never saw him without a whiskey and coke in his hand while I was growing up. Not the future I want either.

Sorry for your and your Dad's loss, upminer. Alcohol robs us of so much - health, time and life to name a few.

Thanks all apparently a heart attack but the point is still that daily alcoholic fog routine I was falling into was his life. My dad quit at 60 and he is so better for it I hope to be as well

I have been a 'problem drinker' all my adult life. I've had a couple of year long breaks and quite a few dry-out periods, but here I am in my early 60s, retired with a good pension and no mortgage and the one thing I don't want to do is drink until I die. It is a pretty stark thing to say and to be quite so blunt to oneself about.
