I decided to not tell them. Just because it could open up a can of worms.

That being said I don't think it would cause problems. I work at a great company. I'm sure my boss already knows I drink to much. I've came in hungover everyday for years.

Well, it's flu season so a lengthy absence may not be to conspicuous...

Since you are quitting drinking too should probably check-in with your primary physician anyway. Just get a vague note from him that you were under his care for an illness...

Yeah don't let it be known you are having a problem with alcohol... The label never leaves. Seen it many times. I've got guys in recovery for years still fighting that stigma with management.

Late to the party, but I agree with the decision to no say anything at work.

"unwell" and leave it at that!!

I was a bit off for the first few weeks and at work i was being asked was I alright a few times, but kept trucking until things subsided, no one at work knows I even had a problem with alcohol and haven't given them any ammunition!!

Keep it simple!!

Sounds like a good plan, Vendetta. The outcome will NOT be good with telling your employer about your alcohol problem.

The only time you want to tell your employer about your alcohol abuse problems is when you're asking them to accommodate it as a disability.

Other than that, keep your zip zipped up. Your boss has a bunch of other employees to hover over -- maybe you're not even on his radar because he's obsessed with firing Steve in Accounting. Don't rock the boat on a calm sea.

I am a manager and to be frank, I don't need to know the details of why someone is out, until it becomes problematic enough for some kind of action on the companies part. Having said that I am pretty empathetic to people and I wouldn't judge someone negatively if they were having an issue and wanted to let me know, but there are a lot of jerks in the world, so it is best to keep it to yourself for now.

How are you doing today btw?

So far so good. Tired but can't sleep. I'm wondering when the bad stuff will start.

Thank you all for the support.

If you're a few days in and no "bad stuff" I'd say you might be in the clear, at work mostly I was dizzy and couldn't concentrate, mix in the lack of sleep and no appetite and work was a struggle for the first few weeks!!

Plenty of fresh air, fluids, try to eat something was my plan, everything adjusted in a few weeks for the better!!

It takes a little bit for the sleep. I found even though I wasn't sleeping as many hours, or none, I felt better than when I was not sleeping and just passed out.

If the bad stuff starts, don't go buy beer, go to the emergency room, or urgent care. Don't hesitate, detox can be deadly. They can and will keep you alive, IF it does get bad. Is there anyone around you that knows what's going on?

I went an urgent care today they just referred me to a rehab center.

I live alone but I have let a couple friends know what's going on.

This is just day 1 for me.

Well you weren't detoxing yet, so keep that on the plate if you need it. Just to share my experience, I didn't go through much other than having trouble getting to sleep, moodiness, and guzzling water. I wasn't trying to scare you, just don't risk it if things were to get bad.

Oh yeah, and ice cream, get some ice cream

Maybe I'll replace my beer stop with an ice cream stop.

Vendetta,
Congrats on starting day one. The one thing I will say is detoxing alone or at home without meds can be deadly, I tried once and I only drank one to two bottles of wine a day and went to e.r. the meds they can give you makes everything so much easier and stops seizures and curbs anxiety. I got a script for an at home detox for five days without it I wound up racing to e.r.....so please if you get to shaky, or in general feel like it gets worse dont wait it out and get yourself to e.r....also try having your friends stick around or check on you my worse days were day two escalating to day three...so please dont take it lightly if you start feeling worse and get some at home detox meds ... anyways dont let this post frighten you...good for getting off the crazy alc train and wish you the best!

Does your company have a program to help with alcoholism? Some do. If yours does, then do it. If they do not, then I would keep quiet.
