im back again
Hey. I did well for a long time. Then I lost my dog out the front of my house when she escaped through a hole under my house and she was hit by a car and killed. Those of u who may remember me will know my dogs are my family. So anyway. That happened and I lost the plot entirely. I need ur support to get be back on track. I've been drinking 13 drinks a night.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dogs are my family too. I lost my 13 yo golden this summer, it was really tough. I numbed my feelings too by drinking a bottle of wine a night.
You can do this again! Sounds like you were doing great!
Start again for your dog you have lost. You deserve a sober and happy future!

WELCOME BACK, I feel your loss.
At meetings lately a lot of sharing taking place regarding the pain of a lost pet. The pain is so real, like the loss of a family member. We are encouraged to get to more meetings and call members when we feel it’s too much to handle.
Things like this unfortunately take time to heal, that four letter word!
Try to remember that we cannot drink in safety which was our pain relief for so long.
Sent a prayer in your direction.

I also lost one of my dogs, my family for thirteen years, this past year.
It was devastating and I still think of him daily and visit the place I buried him frequently.
I posted about it briefly, but the thing that was most important was that for the first time in losing one of my dogs I didn't use alcohol to get through it. It made the grieving hard and deep but now I have some peace.
Maybe you still have some grieving to do if you've been numbing yourself?
People who don't love dogs as family maybe don't understand how deep it goes.
The only beings I could ever let my emotional guard down with are my animals.
I just wanted you to know I understand. When I was kid, one of my dogs ran in front of a car and was run over with me watching and died in my arms. There is nothing which makes that better but time, but the love and memories of daily life with your dog are yours forever.
What do think is the best way to finally beat this alcohol thing? It's a New Year and you can start again and win this time. Filling the drinking time and dealing with the underlying causes will help you beat the cravings. If you were having success before this terrible event, it sounds like you had a plan that was working. What needs to be changed or improved to make it better?

Animalnurse - my heart cries out to you. I have 3 dogs and 2 cats - they, too are my family. Get yourself through this, and do whatever you can to not rely on the alcohol to get you through. We all know that the problem is still there whether we drink or not. You are in my thoughts. And I wish you healing during this difficult time.

Thanks for all ur messages. I'm definitely still grieving for my girl but I feel like when I was on track they were one of my main motivations.because I have other dogs I know I need to give them my full attention and not half ass it because I'm drinking. I'm glad to be back here because u all helped tremendously in the past. For those asking about detox I know u might not like it but I've stopped at this level on my own before and the only side effects I get are a bit of shakes sweats and insomnia. I don't know why I don't get worse but I don't.

Good to see you back luvvie - I so get how 'easy' it is to just fall apart at such a time (dog lover / owner myself).
Re detox - no criticism at all if you're doing it without any medical help BUT be aware that from my own long experience and the accepted medical literature and practice: the risk of seizures etc are very high, especially with each successive withdrawal attempt. Hence, in my own case, I have detoxed myself at home (only on day 10 sober now) using the prescribed minimum regime of Valium, plus B1 etc. One's age plays a part in the equation too. At the very least, luv, maybe go to your doctor for a check up of general obs and so s/he can monitor you regularly for a while. I'm seeing mine 3 times a week now that I'm not so sedated and able to get out of the house.

I'm so glad you are back, and so so sorry about your dog.
I know how hard it is to get over something like that, and I think the best we can do is to honour our beloved animals by being good to ourselves.
