what I've learned in a year
Congratulations Lbrain - and thanks again for another inspiring post. Really helps to be reminded that rather than be passive, powerless victims we can be strong, spirited and determined
Congratulations LBrain! Thank you for this post. I really needed to hear this today. I've slipped many times this year and continued to go back to drinking.
This portion of your post below stuck out to me. I need to make more of an effort and commitment if I want to stop drinking. I think the hardest thing for me is letting it go and know I will never drink again. Thanks again for your post.
+ "THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING >>>>> You have to want to stop more than anything else. And unless you fully grasp that concept you will continue to "relapse", "slip", "fall off the wagon" or whatever you want to call it. Until you are totally committed to never drink again and never change your mind, you are at risk. And even if you do make that commitment, you will be tempted at times"

+ Don't ******** yourself (or me) saying that you have to attend this or that event. I know it's ******** and you know it.
+ And if you HAVE TO ATTEND and you don't tell people you quit drinking and cannot drink, it's your own fault when they shove a glass in your face and you crumble.___________________________________________
I love your list. So head on! Ok and the above...is perfect for this time of year! Great post!

I like your list there. Pretty much summed it all up nicely. Two things that really stand out to me now:
It really does take a long time. Months. I kinda wish someone had told me this from the get go. I'm four months in and can finally say that the obsession is gone. Still doesn't mean I don't think about drinking every now and then. It doesn't mean that life is always easy cause I'm sober. Or an amazing miracle has happened and I'm super duper happy all the time. But that's life. It was like that the whole time. Was just too blind to see it. I see lots now. Feel lots too. And that's some good growth worth living for.
+ Quitting drinking only solves one thing. Drinking. Learning how to live life and face reality may take some work. But if you are not drinking it makes it a hell of a lot easier to learn how to deal with reality. + Don't expect overnight miracles. Some people feel better in a month, some six months and some even longer. Don't get frustrated or lose faith. IT DOES GET BETTER!
