Serious Questiion

Has anyone ever broken their new sobriety so they could qualify for rehab. Not going to go into very much detail, but I am 7 days sober from the bottle and 27 days off pill popping. MY HMO will only cover rehab if my tox screening comes back positive, I have been struggling just to get me this far and know that I need a program to help me... my thought is to break sobriety for 3 days and have my wife check me into treatment. ]

Anyone with similar experiences or can people advise me further.... thanks for reading, and please keep responses to a private message unless you want to give me support.

I continue to hear about this problem, and it blows my mind, someone needs to continue with their addiction just to get help?? the US is nuts!!

I'm not in a position to give advice, but hopefully there will be a few coming behind me with some input!!

Perhaps you will continue to be sober without rehab. Give it a try. If you do relapse, then you will test positive, right?

It blows my mind too. I cannot understand it.

I can't give advice on this any better than what GHD said- but I hope others can, and will.

I have spoken with not only my wife but also my father children and sister. They are also heartbroken that it has come to this and dumfounded by the decisions of my insurance. I have told them of my plan, and would have the support I need to get me to recommit following the binge and would have an extra diligent family to monitor me for anything crazy. I love my family and I have chosen to get clean for them I just feel like im having to surrender to a war that im not done fighting in.

It goes against everything we work for.

Long shot here, so bear with me.

Could your wife take you to detox, and just before you go in have the SMALLEST quantity possible? Not binge and go, just go and have a tiny little bit in your system. I doubt the requirement to get in is to be half baked for heaven sakes.

No no no, why do you have to binge??? The requirement cannot be to get smashed to get in. You **** positive, just a tiny bit?

I don't know what to tell you. I truly hope you get the help you need. PK is right, the U.S. health system is nuts.

yep, I was ordered to rehab by my employer through eap - then when they found out I already quit drinking for over a week I was told I had to drink the night before/morning of or I would not be admitted and insurance wouldn't cover it. I was blown away. My wife was dumbfounded, but I did what I had to do. Other wise my sobriety date would have been a week sooner.
Un --------believable. But it's true.

Sounds like alcoholism talking more so than logical/sound judgment - "here's a new reason it's OK to take a drink."

Say you get into rehab, by whatever means, I assume you understand that IF you're an alcoholic you'll likely NEED some sort of after-care program. It doesn't matter to me if it's AA or something else. Initially getting sober when that's the challenge in front of you seems like it's impossible but I've found that over the seven+ years I've been sober and in recovery, the initial phase was about 10-15% of the job. The majority has been the work I've done SINCE I started. (aka, the work I've done after my initial detox)

If you've already got a start.......which you said you do.......I'd focus on whatever that aftercare plan is since no rehab facility I know of will guarantee long-term life-long sobriety based solely upon a short 28-day stay (or less) in their program. Rehab is about safe detoxing and giving you some basic tools to carry you over into the next phase - living the rest of your life sober AND happy. (and make no mistake, unless you're happy with your life in sobriety, it likely won't last).

I don't personally know anyone who sobered up for decades after just a stint in rehab/detox. (and before anyone flips out, I'm not saying it hasn't happened, I'm just saying I don't personally know anyone) I do know LOTS of people who stayed sober their whole life, many decades, by working a strong aftercare program yet never went to detox/rehab.

I guess it makes sense. Why would you need a bed in detox if you're sober? A week with out alcohol and a month without drugs is a great start. You are on here which is great support. Maybe try some other resources as well. When you leave detox they will insist on a program to keep you sober, I would start now. What scares me, is you start drinking to get a bed in detox. Guess what?....no bed available. So you keep drinking in case one opens up. I think we know that could take awhile and you can be so full blown back in the habit you wont care if you have a healthy life or not.

I am so so sorry for you!!! Can you check out other resources? It looks like you're past acute withdrawal for both drugs. I live in the US as well, and it's nuts. I get so baffled by everyone saying, get to your Dr. Um, in the US, they push in facility detox horribly. I couldn't get outpatient drugs to detox and I had only been drinking for 2 years) Good luck to you, and congrats on your sobriety. Will your insurance cover an addiction specialist/counseling? I haven't been to one but just throwing that out there.

I had to do it. Three rehabs told me to do this. (Pretty damn unethical) I was 3 weeks sober trying to find a good place to go. All my family members convinced me it was the only way to get better. Turns out it was an over crowded mess with lots of AA, no freedom, Tony Robbins style rah! rah! sessions and some smattering of holistic mumbo jumbo. There was almost no one on one therapy and a nonexistent medical staff. It did get me out of a very messy situation for a month. Wasn't worth drinking for. This is just my experience.
If it's twelve steps you want remember AA is free. Do your research before committing to a rehab facility. They are in business to make money. I am still sober over two years later but I can not give the rehab credit. I just never want to put myself or my family through that whole mess again.
