Hi Jack-
Make sure you aren't tired , hungry or bored. Also, if you have phone numbers of other alcoholics or sponsor ( or any other supportive person) pick up your phone and call them. Try taking a walk, go outside get some fresh air, pray or meditate. If you can distract yourself just for a little bit, the craving will pass. I'm at day 30 almost and I have had to use these diversions quite often- but they work! hang in there. From what I read and from my AA meetings, the cravings decrease and almost diminish with time!
Good Luck

Jack, hang in there! That first couple of weeks are rough, but it does get easier. Is there anything in particular that seems at the root of the cravings, or just general desire? Someone on here mentioned that feelings for cravings pass pretty quickly. If there is something in particular that is triggering you to drink, that could be useful to identify and make a plan around.
Congratulations on 6 days. That is fantastic!!

Your doing the right thing by coming here and talking about your cravings. Something that I learned here on SR that helps me immensely is: cravings r going to come, no matter what , especially this early. Once I accepting that it empowered me because I kinda of new what I was dealing with and began putting together a plan of attack. You can do this keep reading and posting and most of all implement some of the ideas of people on here that have been through it. Sure helps me and I was a hopeless suicidal drunk.
Thanks guys, just to share it with you helps a load.
Found myself in a situation which churned up some pretty strong emotions and my body just screamed out for alcohol.
Got myself out of there. Since then been doing some deep breathing and playing some loud rock music.
I'm actually off to a gig now which will be a good distraction. It's in a bar but I'm not worried about that.
There's no way in hell a drink is passing my lips today. Cravings have eased a lot already.
Thanks thanks thanks

Hi Jack16.
In my experience the cravings/urges do pass. But for me they can be very uncomfortable at their intensity.
The will lose much of their power IF you do something about it when you are in the midst of it.
That can be anything really...Coming to SR. Calling someone you trust. Going for a walk in the cold air...Getting exercise. Having a glass of water or a coffee.
I'm only a few months sober now, but i know the feelings you are talking about. If you're like me...Alcohol holds nothing for us.
I much prefer my new life.
Good luck to you.

I've actually found chocolate to be very beneficial with regards to cravings. There is some reasearch out there that suggests compounds in the cocoa stimulate the same neurotransmitters affected by alcohol.
Hang in there Jack. You're doing great, it's early days yet.
For me, stuffing my face with food, (especially sweet food) playing PC games, walking, pretty much living on here, going to AA, drinking water, tea, coffee, and shouting at my AV was how I got through that first week or so.
How was the gig ?

Thanks again everyone. On way home now. The gig was pretty boring in the end, but they're mates so it's good to support!
Pleased I beat the cravings, but feeling pretty flat. Been carrying around this ball of low level panic/ depression for a week now. Wish to god I could shake it. Trouble is its hard to tell where it stops and the cravings begin.
I know I'll feel ok again soon. Just got to ride it out till then.
All your support and solidarity has truly kept me together.
Thanks. Best wishes to you all.
