I'm a binge drinker who thinks about quitting a lot but then worries I'll be left out in the cold socially. But today, I've made up my mind to stop. My husband stopped last year so he's a good example - and we'll have an alcohol free house at least.

In the past when I thought of quitting, I was a bit scared. But now, I actually feel revved up about it.

Having your husband for support is truly a blessing. Many struggle because their partner drink. You can totally do this, go for it and make the jump. :ring

Hey read4life- A big Welcome!

Congrats on your decision to stop. Having your husband there to help you should make things a bit easier, I would guess, as he'll have an idea of what you'll be going through.

You might find that your social life will have to adjust with this change. Trying to go out and have the same type fun, in the same type of a scene, might not work out. However, as you become more accustomed with being sober, I think you'll find other 'fun' things to do. The social aspect affected me a bit too, however I am slowly adjusting. Plus the many benefits of being a non-drinker are well worth the small sacrifice.

You are already ahead of the game with a spouse who is not a drinker- as for your social life, mine has gotten better since I stopped- I can go wherever I want, get myself home safely, remember the next day and engage in intelligent conversation no matter what the hour. The drinking buddies I used to hang with are still in my world, but not nearly as much, but more people have shown up to take their place and it has been a much more interesting life lately. Best to you- this is a great place for support, advice and we are great cheerleaders.

Hi read4life and welcome.

There was a great post this past weekend pointing out that sobriety is not a punishment. It made me realize that I had often viewed it as such. I'm coming around in my attitude though. Although I still struggle at times, I am genuinely beginning to view my new life with excitement and anticipation.
