Better since turkey day freak out

I wanted to check in and thank everyone again since the support on Thanksgiving eve. I've been feeling a lot more grounded to my program since then and have tweeked some thought processes.

On a different note, I've been thinking a lot about how to celebrate or reward myself without drinking. Of course, it used to be 5 thousand gallons of wine for even the tiniest accomplishment or good feeling. Not a possibility now- which actually is a relief. How do you reward yourself with alcohol not being and option?

Thank you!!

Haha, I'll have to get some ice cream! Rarely eat it. The baths are helpful so far :)

Never with food. For me its nail polish.

MissOverIt 11-29-2014 05:08 PM

Oooooooohhhhhhhhhh., I like that one. I just started paying attention to my nails again.

I get a new piece of clothing or a pedicure. Something small, but a treat in some way.

One thing I've realized in the short time I've been sober is how horribly I have taken care of myself. I'd work until exhaustion and "reward" myself by drinking until I could shut down. Now, I refuse to exhaust myself at work or at home: my sobriety is too important. Going to bed early with a good book helps me. And I love treats! Some of my favorites include: Perfume, new workout clothes, shoes, makeup, ice cream :), sleep, patting myself on the back. I also just bought myself a new outfit for Christmas to reward myself for not drinking. (Clearly, I'm making up for lost time here with the spoiling)!:lmao

I don't like crazy nail polish but I have this clear with tiny colored glitter that sparkles. Understated but a hint of à flash.

It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it Matilda? Go ahead and spoil yourself, you deserve it. And I think it's the best when we do it ourselves and not rely on others for that. The greatest love is loving ourselves (my favorite Whitney Houston song....). But it's so true.

I know it sounds cliche, but in many ways being sober is the reward.

For me drinking was not a reward anyway...it was necessary to keep me from going into withdrawals or my BP and heart rate spiking from my physical dependance.

I did get a new guitar after one year as a milestone gift.

Books, always books. :)

matilda123 11-29-2014 06:00 PM

Anna, do you know this quotation from Kafka?

A book is the axe to break the seas frozen in our souls. (paraphrasing from the German, here).

Spa or salon visit is a nice reward/treat if you're into it (I am!)

JanieJ 11-30-2014 02:03 AM

New clothes, books, CDs, haircut, new bag, shoes ?

I like to go to a posh cafe and have a really nice coffee and a bit of cake.

Go out with your friends, somewhere you've never been.

I'm with pumpkinny on the health spa for a day, get a massage, facial and a sauna, you deserve it hun x

PurpleKnight 11-30-2014 01:21 PM

Every Sunday morning I have a nice coffee and a chocolate muffin at a local coffee shop, compared to what I used to spend on alcohol it's a small expense!! :)
