tapering off codeine

Dear group,

Over the past 12 months, I've been taking 50 painkillers a day (nurofen plus)
and would love to taper off these drugs once and for all. Tomorrow I am going to start tapering off them.
First week - 30 pills a day
second week - 20 pills a day
third week - 15 pills a day
fourth week - 10 pills a day
fifth week - 5 pills a day

I have gotten clean once before in the past and was clean for about a year. Mind you, I was taking far less back then. This time, I have really hit rock-bottom. I would love for support so I get more motivation to kick this nasty and soul destroying habit once and for all.
If you are in a similar boat or have been, please let me know your story. I would love to hear from you.

Every day I will let you know how I'm doing....

Ryan

Hey blackclouds. Codeine is doable (as are all of them).

I was on oxy, hydro, valium and ativan for years. When I quit, I was at about 120mg a day of the hydro/oxy and roughly 70mg of valium. I cold turkeyed it all and lived through it. The benzos were way worse than the opiates. You can do this, trust me.

Best wishes! I tapered off alcohol and it got dicey with the math toward the end and I started to increase. I know opiates and benzo's require a lengthier taper so sticking to the schedule is key. RR and AVRT gave me the push to stop finally after 2 weeks. I also used a schedule and sweats/shakes as a barometer. You know your symptoms. Keep us posted.

I didnt mind ct'ing the opiates as much because I had done it tons of times when I ran out. I really wish I could have tapered the benzos, though. That nearly broke me. I guess its similar to alcohol wd only it lasts longer. Always taper anything like that. The ativan was just brutal.

That's One Eyed Gracie...the best dog ever! I have 2 others, they are grumpy senior citizens but still love them.

I have no experience with codeine withdrawal Ryan, but I wish you well.
Did you consult with a Dr over this or is this your own plan?

Thanks every-one for the

Day One - Took my 30 pills this morning. I would normally too have an afternoon binge but that isn't happening today. I really have to slowly come off these horrible pills as I am getting horrible stomach aches again that only Zantec can help ease them. Hopefully the reduction from 50 down to 30 pills will see me going to the toilet without laxative aid.

I've decided I am not going to buy all the pills at once, just for each week. This is a really great forum. So much better than the last one I visited which was almost like a ghost town. This community thrives!

Day Two - Had a couple of srong urges to take an afternoon dose but I remained strong willed and fought the temptation. Apart from that, it was a very good day. I've been playing a game called Diablo 3 to take my mind off things, its a really good time-sink too!

Holy crap, Dee!! That is the largest post-count I have ever seen on any internet forum. Are you a cyborg? ;-)

Day 3 - Starting to feel a little bit irritable but I forget all about it when I play Diablo 3 when I get home from work. As the character in my game battles demons and hard-ships, I too feel like I am on the same path, slaughtering demons of my very own ;-)

In future, I shall post updates every 3 days unless I need you cause I have cracked or something like that. Thanks again every-one for your posts and loving support.

Oh crap, my apologies. Forum's been a bit weird tonight. It was telling me to wait 30 seconds in-between posts, even though I had only made one post. I did refresh the page and my replies did not come up until now....
Weird.....

Just an update - Monday I start the tapering off all over again as I gave into temptation on a few occasions. If I don't succeed this time, I'm going to consent my doctor and see what my options are.
