Alcoholics are a sub-species.
This isn't meant as an offensive post, just an observation. I see addicts being cared for, with fresh needles, new crack pipes, blankets etc. When it comes to alcoholics, we seem to be treated as the lowest of the low, beyond contempt. Even at the hospital, I see doctors and nurses looking down at these people, contemptuous, almost ridiculing. Like anyone grew up thinking, hey, I think I will be alcoholic when I get older. People think its because we lack will power, or are self centered, or unloving. Lacking morals, deserving what we got.
I am back, btw... I realize I cannot drink anymore. Breaking off a bad relationship with alcohol, alcohol was too controlling and abusive to my life. One week down.. glad to be back. Over most of the WD's..

I have to agree with you on your observation. I have noticed that too. I certainly didn't wake up in hopes of becoming an alcoholic one day, that's for sure!
Good for you on getting through one week!

People free of addictive behavior have no idea what it's like to be an addict. Alcohol, being socially acceptable, doesn't rate the sympathy that something like heroin does. Even now, as pot becomes legal and more socially acceptable, more people will bolt down the rabbit hole to addiction and soon become pariahs. "But, it's just pot!" Well, it was just beer before.

One of the BEST things about being FREE from Alcohol (and other life-controlling substances/defects of character) is that we don't have to be affected by whatever 'others' do, or what they think or say about us...because we are FREE from it...and we can CHOOSE to be the relevant factor in ANY situation.
11th Step Prayer
Lord, make me a channel of Your peace--that where there is hatred, I may bring love--that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness--that where there is discord, I may bring harmony--that where there is error, I may bring truth--that where there is doubt, I may bring faith--that where there is despair, I may bring hope--that where there are shadows, I may bring light--that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.* Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted--to understand, than to be understood--to love, than to be loved.* For it is by self-forgetting that I may find.* It is by forgiving that I may be forgiven.* It is by dying that I may awaken to eternal life.* Amen

Welcome back. Good job on the week.
Opinions and people vary. It's important to try to focus your thoughts to the positives in life, if at all possible. I tend to the negative myself sometimes, with or without alcohol. Redirect negative energies and thoughts as best you can, this will usually get you the best results.
I wish you well.

I re-watched a great movie over the weekend regarding addiction. There was a scene where the female lead was upset with her lover for not disclosing the fact he was an addict...his "disease" to her. She herself had disclosed to him that she had battled cancer before they met and disclosed that on their first date.
His response as to why he did not tell her was great .. "with yours you get sympathy, with mine you get judgement".
How very true. Addiction begets judgement, the majority of the time.

Hey losteverything-
Congrats on the first week!
My WDs were pretty much done within the first week or so myself, so I'm guessing once that's over with, then things might even be a bit easier for you.
~Nice job ~

I think we as alcoholics should form lobbying a group!!! We are the drunkards, mad as hell and not going to take it anymore! We deserve equal rights!!! We wanted to be treated as good as junkies, Damn It!!!!
I'll start making bumper stickers......
Glad you're here ( me too ) Glad you're sober and Great Job on a week!! Let's focus on that, together.....

Abraham Lincoln addressed a group called the "Washingtonians " back in 18 something. (a sobriety fellowship that was the fore runner to AA)
Essentially he said something like "I do not understand your incredible thirst, but I admire your concern for one another "
In other words... Only alcoholic folk truly understand other alcoholic folk.
That's where the help is..... You may or may not get a lot of understanding or help from the medical community.
Medicine is yet to find a sufficient substitute for alcohol.... They merely have aids to withdraw us from it.
Staying permanently separated from alcohol is another matter entirely
