Severe anxiety at 20 days sober. Normal?

I got diagnosed with gastritis and gerd yesterday. I am sure I was masking the symptoms by continuing to drink before I got sober. At this point I keep having panic attacks and I know it is because I used as alcohol as a coping mechanism for so long. I just need some support and helpful words from my SR friends... Maybe some advice and coping mechanisms. Is it normal to feel this way? Am I balancing out? Will this get easier and be worth it in the long run? I'm just looking for answers from people who have been in this situation and overcame it. I don't want medication so please try and avoid offering that as advice. Thanks a lot.

At 20 days I was more depressed than anxious. I have heard many talk about the anxiety so I think it is very common. You could try some tension tamer tea that seemed to help me when I entered my stressed out phase of recovery.
I did have an attack of gastritis a couple years before I quit. I also had acid reflux. Quitting drinking almost eliminated that.

Anxiety is common in early recovery. It will get better the longer you are sober.

At first my body and mind evened out after having no control over them when drinking. Then I was able to start managing both my mind and my body so i was able to participate in the highs highs, lows, twists and turns of life. Turns out its not so bad most of the time ... Certainly its always a lot easier than drinking and at times genuinely brilliant. Yes, it's worth it.
