What do you do for a living?
I work for a start-up technology company that focuses on helping kids learn math, science, and language arts online. I am also the company's Spanish-language consultant. I work in a "virtual office" so I moved down to Central America to take advantage of traveling and perfecting my Spanish.
My old side business involved renting out flats to international tourists in Chicago. I plan to get something similar up and running down in Central America in the next few years, much like meraviglioso is doing.

I run a non-profit cause I started for tweens/teens in 2012 and am also a non-fiction and fiction writer. This, my vocation, is definitely my ongoing vacation. There is no "back to reality" from me after travelling! Love it!
BTW, I haven't had a chance to read through the whole thread (did 2.5 pages so far)-but I have to say the quality of the people on here should say something about the baffling effects of addiction. Amazing people, each and every one of you.

My main occupation has always been doing different kinds of biological research in academic environment. In the last few years my field has been the neurobiology of addiction, which involves studying both molecular mechanisms related to drug abuse in the brain, and associated behavioral abnormalities (using approaches that some people know as "experimental psychology"). I do this with a very dynamic (frequently changing) team and many collaborations, so a big part of my job is also coordinating these teams (I really don't like management much, but it's grown to be part of the work). Just recently I started some teaching in grad school. Something else I started is public outreach activities to raise awareness to drugs, drug abuse, and how they affect the brain. Besides these, I have an old business (completely unrelated to my research stuff) that I started a very long time ago (during college) with my father in my home country, and I am just in the process of closing this down.
I also enjoy traveling a lot and living in different environments, I never felt strongly attached to any country or place (although NYC now is very much an ongoing love affair). I've had a kind of dream for a long time that perhaps I could set up two bases (probably countries) and shuttle between them. My alcohol problem cut into this completely and it has not happened, but I am revisiting the idea now.

KissMyTiara unless you are retiring tomorrow it's never too late. I was a teacher for 25 years when I jumped ship and started my own business.
My ba kground is nuclear engineering. Retired for the moment. Prolly get into technical writing or project management if the wife keeps nagging me to get a job.
Or just work at a golf course down south - as long as I get to play for free.
A kayak guide service may be a side job next spring. I have a new custom kayak trailer taking up space in the garage. I don't want a real job anymore.
My plan to be a bartender when I retire is scratched - wasn't ready to retire and not prepared to be a bartender anymore.

Currently I am an insurance regulator/actuary for the state of Alaska. Past jobs include stay at home mom, software engineer and microbiologist. After I retire I plan on trying my hand at non-fiction writing.
Something interesting... where I went to rehab there were a LOT of NYC firefighters and cops. I couldn't imagine that work in new york - or anywhere for that matter. There was also a fair amount of EMT's - first responders deal with a lot...
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!
