Hello from a noob

I am very happy to have come across this site. I have been looking through posts for the past few days and feel this will be a helpful place for me.

I was honest with myself the other day and decided that it truly is time to stop drinking. For a couple years, I kept telling myself, I will quit on Monday, or after this event or that holiday. If I actually tried to follow through, I would make an excuse after a couple days and go right back to drinking heavily. One beer would lead to 15 or more. One drink would lead to a whole fifth.

I am tired of all the negative effects of my drinking problem. I am tired of my effect on others lives when drunk. I am tired of waking up feeling like crap 5 or more days a week. I am tired of the depression and anxiety. I am tired of the guilt and embarrassment the next day over stupid drunk antics. I am tired of waking up and not remembering the past few hours before passing out.

I am ready to be a better husband, better son, better person, and ditching the drink is my first step towards happiness. I look forward to being a part of this community.

Today, Oct 23rd, 2014 is my first day of my alcohol free life.

You won't regret your decision. :) Quitting drinking was the best thing I ever did for myself. I'm in so much better shape, mentally and physically, since I got sober. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! I am feeling positive and excited about starting a new life, but am also a little scared. I will succeed though with self determination and support from great people like yourselves.

growpath 10-23-2014 07:14 PM

Don't be scared...that's just the addiction, habit talking. You alone make the decision to pick up or not. As the days add up things will start making more sense and get a bit easier :)

Congratulations. The realization that I could stop was the best feeling I had in years. It won't be easy but nothing worth doing ever is.
