Day 7! But brain gone....
Day 7! But brain gone....
Morning!
Day 7 here and feeling much more energetic
However.....I seem to have lost my brain! I could be a little bit ditsy and forgetful when I was drinking and thought this would improve when I stopped, but it's actually got worse!!! I'm constantly walking round the house in a daze wondering what the hell I'm looking for or supposed to be doing!
Sleep isn't great yet so maybe that is taking its toll. Just hope this improves as I read another thread a while ago where it was still a problem a few months later!
Anyone else lost their brain when they lost the booze??

Oh yeah, by lunch time I sometimes struggled to say what I had for breakfast... Without taking ten minutes to retrace the morning hour by hour.
This morning I had honey on toast... Two slices.
I remembered that in 5 seconds and it's nearly dinner time here in Australia.
It will get better.
And yes... 7 days. A week. Top work!!!

Hey Mavis,
I felt like an alien for a few weeks. I could drive and go through the motions so I had some brain power but I was walking through a fog. I had trouble spelling and even enunciating my words at times. I was shocked at how long it took for me to feel sharp again. I'd say it took about six weeks until I felt pretty normal.
You are stronger than you think though! Save your brain power for work or remembering to pay bills on time and when you have down time, really relax as much as you can. I was really worried that I had damaged my brain beyond repair after eight years of drinking 10-15 units of alcohol 360 nights a year. I figured that I had really blown my circuits because I never even gave myself a week off for years.
The healing is slow but it does happen. The one thing that would not help at all is drinking, obviously. I used to drink to feel normal every night so when I stopped it took quite a long time to feel alert and sharp again. You'll get there.

Congratulations on 7 days, Mavis! You're doing so great!
And YES to your question about feeling mentally foggy. I'm only on Day 2 this time around, but I remember last time it took me about 2 weeks to start feeling "normal" again...whatever "normal" is!

Hey, I'm with you. I've been sober 5 weeks-ish. I expected to sharpen up in sobriety but I seem to be suffering some major cognitive derailment. I have trouble finding my words and my memory is crap.
Mavis, Congratulations on the 7 days. it is a great accomplishment. I heard the forgetfulness and foggy feeling is due to the brain finding new paths around the old alcohol ones. They say it does get better, I hope so because I have the same thing going on. in addition by the end of my day, I am so tired.
Could be some PAWS going on, you are "past" the initial withdrawals. It will pass. Someone above pegged it perfectly, living in the fog. I was a foggy mess for a month and crying all the time. I still have off-days, and cry when I need to, but feel more like a ghost and less like a tumbleweed now (Ghosts have more purpose than tumbleweeds)

Congrats on day 7! I'm with you... Sometimes I'll forget mid-sentence where I'm going with a topic, or do something backwards like put a glass in the fridge and the yogurt in the cabinet... Lol part of me was wondering if I'm just naturally ditzy and that I never knew it during my drinking days bc I either blamed the liquor or didn't remember the day's events anyway! >.< I have found that writing things down helps lately though...
