I too have only begun step work. And I found a sponsor specifically for that reason. Despite having EVERY indication that my now sponsor would agree to be my sponsor...crikey it was HARD to ask!!! Being vulnerable...opening ourselves up to rejection or any other ugly thing our mind can conjure is so damn scary.
Actually, in conversation just last night with my said sponsor I was discussing something that makes me a little nervous...
She laughed and said "you'll find lots and lots of things make you nervous when you get sober...and it's NORMAL".
