Any former smokers here?
I quit on New Years day 1991 after smoking for 20 years. Never had a cig since then. I found that to be much easier than quitting alcohol.
Has anyone else gone through this?

I also found it easier than quitting alcohol....less pressure in society to smoke, your friends won't cajole you to just have one....people seem to respect the act of quitting smoking yet often not quitting drinking.

That is a really good point. I admire the fact that you used to smoke and now are running marathons! Cool!

When I quit, my work colleagues were still smoking like chimneys, but my new group of strait-laced friends on the outside were beseeching me to quit. It was very hard for the first thirty days--just as hard as stopping drinking. But after the first thirty days, it was over.
The AV still kept after me for many months after quitting drinking.

I was just thinking about this. I quit about 7 years ago, and sure it was tough...BUT I quit and never went back. I am trying to use that resolve for now, as I have quit drinking. I am an all or nothing kind of gal...if I let myself have one smoke it would lead to two the next day, then three then on and on till I was back to a pack. I have to remember that now, when I think one drink will be ok. I know, deep down, that it isn't. I have too much of an addictive personality.

My last cigarette was on 18 August, six weeks ago I think. I quit once before but really struggled, and started again after 3 months. It didn't take much time until I was back at my previous consumption.
Drinking and smoking are different and we have differing reactions when the addictive substance is removed. Hard to say which was tougher for me, all things considered.

"Easy" is not the word I would describe my quitting cigg days. I was borderline looney! Cigs were the first to go and my other addictions weren't the same without a smoke. But, it got the ball rolling for me.

My pathetic attempt at stoptober lasted all of 2 hours!! I want to stop for health reasons & to feel good in myself but just can't do it.. Feel so weak where fags are concerned BOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Booze was WAY harder to kick for me than cigs. I've had a few cold turkey quits from cigs, that lasted a few months, but always went back when drinking again. Thanks for the post. Now that I'm not drinking, and won't be, it's an excellent time to kick this nasty habit for good. I think because I only drank at night 8-12 pm, but smoked throughout the day, is why alcohol was easier to kick.

I quit both a couple days apart. I used a patch for the cigs, and still am two months later. I quit the beer cold turkey, but relapsed after two days, but not since.
If I touched either one, I know that I'd be back up to a pack per day, or a tall six pack, almost immediately.
Concerning the patches, I feel now that were I to stop using them, I'd have an urge for patches, not an urge for cigarettes. That's good, I think.
Concerning the beer, I drink a lot more coffee, which can be problematic, or I drink a lot of selzer water, which is better. It's been harder to quit drinking, but not impossible, thankfully.
