Hi everyone, I just joined yesterday and am still exploring. It feels very good to be around like minded people, and I am getting a lot from the forums. I am easily half way through my life, and very tired of the cycle of drinking that has become habit for me. When I was young - 7 or 8 years old, I remember my mom giving me Tia Maria, saying how it had my middle name in it, and laughing at me when I got drunk. At 15, I was adding rye to my beer at parties. I don't really remember ever not drinking. I don't know how to act or how to fill my time. I don't know how to deal with boredom. Physically I feel good, but otherwise I am lost. Alcohol is my gateway. I have tried everything I could get my hands on at some point, and each time it started with alcohol. It is the worst thing for me and the first thing I reach for. Hopefully this site is my ticket to freedom. I would like to thank everyone for their honesty and candor. It really helps me with my struggles during this early time of sobriety.

Welcome, islandgrrl! I am honestly shocked that your mom gave you alcohol at 7 or 8 and then laughed when you got drunk (I have a son that age, and there is no way I could imagine doing that!) Have you stopped drinking yet? Please keep posting and let us know how you're doing. We're here for you.

It's so good to meet you Islandgrrl. You're among friends who truly understand. Drinking was no fun in the end, just a nasty habit that was sucking the life out of me. You're doing a great thing by getting free.

Hi Island, I remember sneaking rum into my coke as a kid whenever my parents had parties then giggling for hours. Maybe that developed an early taste for me. Welcome to the site.
